This photograph is from the 1880's or 1890's somewhere on Candacraig Estate. The man with the beard and pipe in the back row is my great great grandfather Charles Lennox McDonald who was head gamekeeper on the estate before taking up farming at Tornahaish. Third from the right in the front row is my great grandfather Alexander McHardy. The individual behind him to the right resembles Piper Jimmy McHardy. The other individuals remain a mystery for the moment. |

John Ross, The Scotsman Monday 20th September 2004
HIGHLAND councillors and members of the Cairngorms National Park Authority are to challenge BT over plans to cut the number of public telephone boxes in rural areas.
The phone giant is consulting on proposals to reduce the number of kiosks across the country from 6,113 to 5,083. BT claims that more than half the payphones in Scotland are losing money because of the increased use of mobile phones.
Among those earmarked for closure are 257 in the Highlands, 103 in Aberdeenshire, 45 in Angus and 48 in Moray. However it is felt that in some remote areas the payphones can be a lifeline in emergencies for tourists and for households without a telephone.
Highland Council’s renewing democracy and community planning committee heard yesterday that removal of 257 of the 692 public kiosks in the region could have widespread implications.
It could mean no public phone box over the 45 miles between Mallaig and Corpach in Lochaber, while visitors and locals could find themselves without a phone in an emergency in remote areas where mobile coverage is patchy.
The council is to suggest to BT that within rural areas in the Highlands, there should be no more than five miles between payphones on the rural network except where there are large areas of uninhabited countryside.
It also feels that all communities with 75-100 households should have a public payphone with these helping to form a roadside network of kiosks outside main communities, taking account of accident blackspots.
Andrew Thin, the national park authority’s convener, is also to write to BT outlining the organisation's concerns about the plans.
Eleanor MacKintosh, who represents Glenlivet, Tomintoul, Strathdon and Corgarff on the national park authority, said: "I am horrified that BT wants to get rid of all these call boxes. This is a damaging move for our rural areas, especially where mobile phone receptions are poor.
"In Glenlivet, for example, we have very patchy mobile phone coverage but are set to lose four public telephone boxes. This proposal by BT raises issues of health and safety and will damage tourism in the area."
A BT spokesman said the use of pay phones was in decline and the review was necessary to safeguard the network for future generations. He said the increase in mobile phones had had a significant impact on payphone usage and profitability. Use of payphones had dropped by about 50 per cent in the last three years.
"We have about 6,000 pay phones in Scotland and 3,800 of them lose money. We are working with mobile phone operators to improve their coverage, but BT Payphones cannot be held responsible for their blackspot areas."Picture: A frosty phone box at Heugh-head turnoff (A. J. McHardy)

Jean Glennie's Notebook - Coming Soon Jean Glennie (nee McHardy) 1859 - 1955 kept a small notebook from the 1920's in which she recorded the marriages, births, and deaths in the glen. You can read more about aunty Jean in the section; "Photographs - other family members". I am indebted to her grandson the late Sandy Massie for making a copy of her work available to my father.

Strathdon Stuff Ask my youngest nephew what he has been doing at school or in any of his out of school activities and the reply is always "stuff". Just what "stuff" constitutes may be difficult to ascertain on every occasion. I therefore think a place for a general collection of events in the eastern part of the parish be most appropriately called "Strathdon Stuff" in his honour.
