Corriehoul and the McHardy Family Page 1

There has long been an association between the McHardy family and Corriehoul, but for just how long I do not know for certain. The gravestone of my great great great great Grandfather John McHardy in Strathdon kirkyard is dated 1813, and states that the family had been there upwards of 600 years. The entries below on the whole involve little original research on my part, but were copied from various sources. The long association with Corryhoul ended when my great great uncle Charles McHardy gave up the tenancy of Burnside of Corriehoul on Whitsunday 1922. My grandfather related to my father that "Charlie went doon the road on a horse and cairt and that was that". So ended the long association between the surname McHardy and Corriehoul.

My father remembers Charlie coming to his Grandfather's funeral in Corgarff in 1939. Charlie died in 1951 in Peterhead. His death certificate lists him as a retired shepherd. If anyone has any further information I would be very pleased to receive it.

Old Parish Records for Strathdon

The Parish records for Strathdon (Invernochtie) began with a register of births in 1667. There are however gaps in marriages from 1710 to 1731, and in baptisms from 1712 to 1731. There are also pages missing from the jumble of books which comprise the records, in particular some for Corgarff in the 1820's. The breaks add to the difficulty of tracing the family line. My expertise in matters ecclesiastical is also very limited which may be borne out in what I have transcribed below. What these efforts have done is to prove that the family were in Corryhoul at least by 1675 and were Protestant.

This was a large and painful task on the eyes. I have done my best in trawling through the microfilm of the old documents prepared by the Church LDS. I profess no ability at being able to interprate the old handwriting styles which gave me a lot of problems, almost as much as faded text and lack of clarity did. Where you see (?) it denotes a word between words that I could not decipher. The page numbers when some appear are numbers someone had transcribed onto the original documents and not some form of ordered structure undertaken for filming. The events were not in chronological order, or even recorded in consecutive journals in some instances. Hence I have produced a chronological list below.

The Parish Record makes mention of a number of McHardy families. I have only recorded details where mentions of both the surname and Corriehoul were made; be it only as one of the Corriehoul family being a witness at a baptism. This in no way to my knowledge implies any close kinship to these other McHardy families, although in such a small population there must have been a close relationship at some point in time. The register for Roman Catholic births in St. Andrew's Parish Braemar 1703 - 1757, and Braemar and Glengairn baptisms 1781 to 1845 were also checked being responsible during this period for Corgarff. There was no mention of the McHardy family of Corryhoul, although the Michies in Wester Corryhoul do appear. Update: Since I did this exercise Sandra DeMartino has kindly gone through the entire Strathdon Parish record and transcribed all references to the surname McHardy. This can be downloaded from her website in pdf format. See The McHardy Family of Ordachoy Geneology Website via the Links Page. I thank her for the additions I have been able to make to the list below.

Alexander Gordone's decreet of Lawbroughs 1682

This is the earliest direct mention of the McHardy family of Corryhoul that I have come across in a book.

Records of Invercauld 1547 - 1828, edited by The Rev. John Grant Michie, Minister of Dinnet, Printed for the New Spalding Club, Aberdeen MCMI.

At p262. For some years previous to 1666 there had been considerable disputes amongst the Highland Lairds regarding marches, priveliges, servitudes and rights of property. In 1666 matters came to a crisis by the outbreak of Farquharson of Inverey against the Gordons in Glenmuick following a raid. Men on both sides died. It assumed the proportions of a clan feud between the Farquharsons and the Gordons. In 1682 Alexander Gordon in Abergeldie who was Commissioner for the Earl of Huntly (a Gordon), had been much harrased by the combination formed against him. He found himself under the necessity of applying to the Lords of Council for a decreet of "Lawboroughs" against them. The decree names a large number of persons. In addition to Farquharson's (who were aligned with McIntosh of Clan Chattan) and their tenants, many named were also Forbes and their tenants. I have listed all mentions of the McHardys,

1682

..........Donald McHardie in Dovinboille, William & Alester McHardy in Corriebroich, Alester McHardy in Invernochtie (Strathdon), John McHardie in Altomiebank, James McHardie in Meikle Corriequek, William McHardie & William McHardie younger in Little Corryhoul, Alister McHardy in Tornihawes (Tornahaish Corgarff), John McHardie in Culnayachen (Colnabaichan Corgarff), Patrick McHardie in Tomanessle, and Alister McHardie in Delhande (Delhandy Corgarff).

Skellater Rentals 1826/1827

Some interesting documents remains in the University of Aberdeen Special Collection which relates to the 1826 and 1827 rentals of Skellater Estate in Corgarff. Forbes of Newe had acquired Skellater in 1815. The documents give an insight into the size of the farms of  Corryhoul.

Burnside of Corryhoul Robert Simpson 11 1 15 3 3 15 £0-12/-11d £12-5/-0d £12-17/-11d

Joseph above was the elder brother of my great great great grandfather James. Robert Simpson's daughter Ann was to marry James. From the surviving records it is evident that the family were having difficulty meeting their rent for reason unknown. The list of arrears for the crop of 1826 shows that Joseph owes the estate some £18-6/-½d. In fact all the tenants at Corryhoul with the exception of the Michie family owe money. A letter at Skellater, dated 6th February 1828, shows that only £2 remained unpaid by Joseph from the 1826 rental; however some £18-6/-½d remained owing from 1827. Between Candlemass and 1st November 1828 Joseph has managed to pay another £6 of that owed. One can only assume that the arrears were eventually met as the family continued farming at Corryhoul for many years after this. With so much of their income going in rent it is of little wonder that so many sons departed for the new world.

For those of you who are arithmetically minded here is some information on the division of land mentioned above.

1 Acre = 0.4 hectares.

1 Acre = 3.9672 Roods.

1 Rood = 40 Perches.

A soccer pitch occupies about 1.78 acres (or 0.72 hectares for the Europhiles amongst you). Oh, and if some of you reading the additions of the rents above are still able to count in LSD; you are correct; some of the addition is a little dodgy but are displayed as they were recorded on the original documents.

Census Records 1841 to 1891

Census records were begun in Scotland in 1841. The date shown below is the official date when the census was scheduled to have taken place. I am sure the dates may have varied. You will see how depopulation took a firm hold at Corriehoul as in the whole glen as the years past. Sometime in the 1830's John McHardy and Sophia Dunbar settled in Easter Corryhoul after leaving Dinnundhu. The origin of this family requires more research.
