The McHardy Family of Corryhoul Website

McHardy gravestones in Strathdon (Invernochty) Parish

Strathdon Parish is now incorporated into what is called Upper Donside Parish. See the website on the links page. Historically the once independant parish covered some 47,700 acres (including the Quad Sacre Parish of Corgarff created in 1874) and has two graveyards. Below are listed the McHardy gravestone inscriptions in Corgarff and Strathdon cemeteries. This was done some years ago by myself, so the list is not exhaustive. I also shortened some of the notes I took. There is also a small Catholic Chapel at Tornahaish errected in 1809, and a Free Church near Roughpark (now Candacraig Estate sawmill) errected in 1888, neither of which had a cemetery.

The boundary between Strathdon and the Quad Sacre parish of Corgarff was the Bogie Burn that runs past Finnylost to where it joins the A944 near the garage at Roughpark (once the smiddy). The first record of the McHardy family of Corryhoul in the Parish Record is in 1676 (Parish Records exist from 1667). Just when the family became Protestant I have no mention, but from the earliest Catholic registers kept we were living alongside a Catholic family by the name of Michie who were still there in the 19th century. (Earliest Catholic records show John and Jane Michie had a son called John at Burnside in 1793). The landowners in the Glen were Protestant.

Corgarff Kirk built 1834

The Old Statistical Account of 1793 records that the Protestant Minister had about 460 persons in his immediate charge and notes; "that the kirk had been growing in strength since before the '45. An itinerant or missionary minister was stationed in the upper district of the parish called Curgarff. He has a salary of £28 Sterling yearly, from the Royal Bounty, with a house". The Catholic priest who looked after the combined mission of Glengairn and Corgarff was reckoned to be responsible for about 100 Catholics in Strathdon Parish, the majority of whom lived in Corgarff. The priest was not resident in Corgarff (Living in Glengairn) and there was no chapel for them to worship at until the one at Tornahaish was built in 1803 (The pre-reformation chapel at Corryhoul had fallen into dissuse sometime before the 18th century). There is record of the priest using the property of the McHardy family of Ordachoy to conduct mass (One of this family went on to be ordained a priest). By 1850 there were only 30 Catholics remaining in Corgarff, depopulation having taken it's toll. There is also record of one mass exodus (excuse the pun) from the priest's flock. "Once at Advent or Lent a marriage took place in some Protestant family in Corgarff and Mr. McIntosh the priest forbade his people to be present at the festivities. They disobeyed him and he gave them up their fut in such a manner that 18 Catholics left the church for good".

I have marked those gravestone inscriptions known to be Corryhoul McHardy's with a small purple angel like this one . Given that so few people had the means to errect gravestones it would probably have been a more comprehensive exercise to have made a list from the burial records. Historically the Kirk Minister at Strathdon had the right to graze a cow in the graveyard and this probably quickened the demise of some of the stones that were erected. I have been unable to find a stone for my great great great granparents James McHardy and Anne Simpson.

Corgarff Cemetery

Corgarff Cemetery is at Corriehoul in the westermost part of the Parish, just a stonesthrow from Easter Corryhoul. It was once the site of a St. Machar's Chapel a pre-reformation church which had fallen into dissuse before the 18th century. (Machar was a companion of St. Columba on his 6th Century trip to the Island of Iona, an Aberdeen cathedral bears his name. More recent research suggests that the name Machar might refer to more than one person. A Columban monk by the name of Machar is supposed to have paid a visit to Pope Gregory the Great at Rome and another legend tells that he became Bishop of Tours in France, the home of St Martin, patron saint of France).

Corgarff Cemetery looking out across the River Don

Corgarff was disjoined from Strathdon & Tarland Parishes on the 9th of March 1874. The present church is some distance from the graveyard and was built in 1834. Space was provided at the "new" church for a graveyard but it was never put into use. The graveyard above has been in use for some time although the earliest rudimenery stone I have seen dates from 1729 for an "F McH". It has been recorded that the Hanovarian army (The Red Coats) in occupation at Corgarff Castle after the 1745 Jacobite Uprising, and still there until the 1830's to suppress whisky smuggling, used the cemetery. There is also record of the Hanovarian army using a suplementary church at Lynn Oarn which is the name of a croft next to the present church. The cemetery was enlarged and improved with a surrounding wall added some time in the mid 1800's by the people of Corgarff. It has been past down through the family that some of our ancestors may even have ploughed the very ground on which they are now burried.

Strathdon Kirkyard

The original name for the parish was Invernochty, and lying just across the River Don is the impressive relic of the Doune of Invernochty, a 12th(?) century motte and bailey castle of great size (60ft or 20m high, and 250ft x 129ft or 83m x 43m in circumference). This was once the Citadel of the Earldom of Mar before the magnificent Norman castle was errected at Kildrummy further down the valley. Water from the Bardoch Burn still entered the moat as late as 1823. On the top of the Doune can be seen the footings of the original kirk.  It was dedicated to St. Andrew. The current Strathdon Church was built in 1851 replacing an earlier building. The interior boasts over 30 marble commemorative tablets. It was restored in 1973. The old kirkyard has many interesting gravestones some mentionioning individuals who had gone from the glen to far off places.

Strathdon Kirk built 1851

The first post reformation reader was Alexander Ross in 1567. The first post reformation Minister was Alexander Mackie in 1585, who also had Kildrummy and Glenbuchat in his charge.

On a recent visit to Strathdon kirkyard I noted that a lot of the old gravestones lying flat on the ground are slowly being covered by grass cuttings. Year on year earth and dead grass are beginning to mount up on them; some may say that this process protects them from the elements. I well remember enjoying my childhood efforts at trying to read the inscriptions on sunny days, and I am left wondering if they will be left visible for future generations to enjoy as they were for myself.

Strathdon Late Wake and Funeral Regulations 1830

The document below was discovered in the Forbes of Newe family papers. It gives an insight into the conditions which prevailed at Late-Wakes and the subsequent funerals in the region at the time. It was the custom to treat these events as a social gathering and the provision of refreshments was seen as a right and necessity by those involved.

Copy of the Regulations to be observed in future at Late Wakes and Funerals in the Parish of Strathdon 1830. Aberdeen University Special Collection MS 2769/I/173

The Minister and the Elders of the Parish of Strathdon submit the following plan for the regulation of Late Wakes and Funerals to the consideration of the heritors and inhabitants of the Parish at large, and earnestly hope that all classes will at once perceive they have piety of entering into an obligation to observe it.

Reg I

No person shall attend a Late-Wake unless specially invited by the nearest relatives of the deceased and the number so invited shall not exceed six on any one nyte.

Reg II

No wine, spirits, punch or refreshments of any description shall be handed round or distributed by the company assembled to attend the funeral oftener than twice.

Reg III

The funeral procession shall in every case be ready to move forward to the place of internment within one hour after the period fixed upon for the attendants to assemble.

Reg IV (This version all scored out).

The elders of the district in which the Late-Wake or Funeral takes place shall attend particularly that no infringement of the above regulations is permitted to take place.

Reg IV (Final Version).

The elders of the district in which a Late-Wake or Funeral occurs shall attend thereat officially for the purpose of taking care that the above regulations are strictly observed, and every breach of them after receiving the sanction of the Heritors and the inhabitants by signature or otherwise shall subject the party offending to payment of the sum of one guinea for the benefit of the Poor's Fund.

Those subscribing the above regulations shall not find it incumbent on them to attend funerals of the friends of these who refuse to enter into this obligation.

In the fascinating volume Scottish Endings - Writings on Death, Compiled by Andrew Martin, Published by National Museums of Scotland, 1996, ISBN 0 948636 86 6 we find reference to such occasions and the reason as to why it was deemed necessary to introduce such regulations.

p73. Records of Argyll

The excesses indulged in by the natives of Tiree at funerals in bygone days caused the then factor, Colonel Campbell, to enact a law that only three rounds should be allowed to be given to those at the funeral - a round meaning a glassful of spirits. Previously it used to be nine rounds. At the first funeral of this enactment, that of Gilleaspuig Laidar (Strong Archie), or Archie McLean, Kilmoluaig his son came to the Colonel and asked liberty, as it was the first, to be allowed to give the usual allowance, or that it would not be confined to the exact three. The Colonel was unmoved, and would not allow his laws to be broken as soon as made. The son went home quite downhearted at the disgrace and dishonour he was compelled to submit to. A happy idea came to his head, by which he would be able to show respect to both living and the dead - viz., he got two bulls horns, corked at one end, and made as to hold three glassfuls. He gave three rounds of the horns; and thus the Colonel's laws were observed, and his father buried with the usual nine glasses apiece to each at the funeral.

p71 Social Life in Scotland

.........These mortuary festivities were relished not only by the living, but the departed comforted their later hours by contemplating their occurrence. Dean Ramsey relates that an aged spinster lady in Strathspey, when on her deathbed, called to her bedside her grand-nephew and heir, and affectionately charged him that as much whisky was to be used at her funeral as had been drunk at her baptism. Unaware as to the extent of the potations on the earlier occasion, the heir allowed each one who attended the funeral to drink what he pleased. The result was a contretemps which the aged gentlewoman could not have foreseen without emotion. When the funeral party reached the churchyard, a distance of ten miles from the place of starting, the sexton's enquiry of the chief mourner, 'Captain, whaur's Miss Kitty?' aroused the company to the recollection that in resting at an inn they had there left the body on a dyke, and had started without it.'
