Kincardineshire

Feudal Overlords, Landowners, and Clan Links (Beware the harvesting of tenant farmer's surnames by the landowners which occurred in the Victorian Period. Don't believe that a given surname is a sept of a land owning clan just because it continues to be reproduced in books from this period.)

OFFLINE  Earls of Mar - Early Genealogy
Find out about the Earl's of Mar from Pictish times before the Elphinstones.

The Elphinstones

The Elphinstones were the next fuedal overlords. They were granted lands from the Earldom of Mar being the Barony of Invernochty and later also Kildrummy. They eventually joined these into what became the Lordship of Elphinstone. This site gives interesting dates and names of this family.

OFFLINE Earls of Mar - Erskines

This is an unofficial homepage for the Erskine family. It has some interesting detail with regards to the Earls of Mar who were feudal overlords to the McHardy families in upper Donside and Deeside after acquiring the Earlship. These areas were sold off in 1738 due to debt problems stemming from the aftermath of the 1715 Jacobite uprising.

 Clan Forbes Website

The Clan Forbes Society is a not for profit organization founded in 1979 to honour the heritage of the descendants of the ancient Clan Forbes of Scotland. A branch of the Forbes family who had been baillies to the Erskine Earls of Mar purchased the Corgarff lands and the McHardy families there became tenants.

 Farquharson Clan UK Website

This site is run by the Clan Farquharson UK Society. The Farquharsons were baillies to the Erskine Earls of Marr. When the Erskines were forced to sell their lands the Farquharsons purchased some of those in upper Deeside. Many McHardy families remained tenants. Like the publications of the 19th Century, where it takes it's information from, it incorrectly lists McHardy as a sept of the Farquharson clan.

 Clan Chattan Website
The official Clan Chattan Website. The McHardys are reputed to have aligned themselves with Clan Chattan via an allegance to the McIntosh clan McHardy. I know that my own McHardy ancestors were out in the '45 with their Forbes landlord in Gordon of Glenbuchat's regiment.

 Clan McIntosh Website
Again relying on the Clan Chattan link; and again incorrectly listing the McHardys as a sept of the clan.

Clan MacDuff (Clann MacDubhich)
It would appear that this clan, aligned to Mackintosh, also have us on their surnames list. Great bit of history on this site.
