The McHardy Family of Corryhoul Website

Family Tree

This tabulated family tree gets updated from time to time when new information becomes available. From the tables below it is evident that history of a number of male McHardy children remains unresolved. There must be more of the Corryhoul tribe out there somewhere. Where are you? Info. Wanted - can you help with any of these children of Corryhoul ?

Due to missing records from Strathdon Parish it is currently difficult to know for sure what my exact lineage is prior to the birth of John McHardy in 1754 below.

My own direct line has blue hyperlinks below. Others family hyperlinks are in purple. Click on these to move up and down the tables.

At the bottom of the page you will also see the family tree of another McHardy family who moved into Easter Corryhoul in the 1830's.

My Family at Corryhoul

The missing records for the district of Corgarff make it difficult to positively identify my lineage prior to William of Little Corryhoul at present; at this there were a number of McHardy households at Corryhoul. The civil upheavals of the Jacobite uprisings are perhaps the cause of the incomplete parish records. I continue to work towards discerning my lineage by other means; but for the moment the following is known.

William McHardy of L. Corryhoul

John christened 18/06/1754 (died Easter Corryhoul 26th November 1813 aged 60 years. Buried in Strathdon Kirkyard)

William christened 25/06/1756

Helen christened 15/12/1758

From here on down a system of colour coding has been added to the children of John McHardy and his wife Margaret Dauney who were married at Tarland Kirk on the 24th December 1787. Margaret must have come from the disjoined part of Tarland Parish which sat in Corgarff. A colour reference system has been added to each of their children who have descendents that have been traced.

Note: For some time it was thought that a John McHardy married to Sophia Dunbar and living at Easter Corryhoul was this individual. However it has since turned out that John at Easter Corryhoul, married to Sophia is not the child of John McHardy and Margaret Dauney.

Charles christened 02/07/1807 (County Police Constable, died 10/12/1866, Dunnichen Parish Forfarshire, having spent periods in the parishes of Lintrathen, Tealing and Newtyle)

James christened 23/07/1817 (Died 06/12/1887 aged 70 years at the Haughton, Corgarff. Unmarried. Was a farmer ).

William christened 23/01/1820 (Died 25/11/1895 at Duncanston, Leslie Parish, Aberdeenshire). Was a farm servant in his earlier life and at the time of his death listed as a crofter. However in the 1871 census he is a police constable living at the Police Station at Kennethmont with his 5 year old son William; and Isabella Matheson his housekeeper. His profession as a police constable is recorded on his gravestone in Kennethmont Kirkyard. By the time of the 1881 census he is a widower living at the Hall, in the neighbouring Leslie Parish and is listed as a crofter and general labourer of 5 acres. Still living with him is his 15 year old son William, a scholar, and Isabella Matheson his housekeeper. The 1891 census has William and his now second wife Isabella at Duncanstone, Leslie which is listed next to the hall. He is still a crofter.

George christened 20/02/1822 (on OPR not on IGI fiches).

Alexander circa 1835 - not recorded in OPR (Died 07/11/1870, aged 34 years,  at the Haughton, Corgarff.  Unmarried. Died in service as a Metropolitan Police Constable). Alexander joined the Lonach Highland & Friendly Society on 15th September 1855. Like his cousin Wullie McHardy of Burnside he was a regular competitor in the games, winning prizes for putting the stone and dancing the Gillie Callum. He is last recorded in the records of the games for 1859. On the 17th December 1860, aged 25, he joined the Metropolitan Police. His height is recorded as 6ft 1¾", a stature expected in the family at this time. Met records did not record his initial police number on joining; however he is later recorded as sergeant PS71 'A'; and then after re-registration as a constable PC 356 'A'. The 'A' stands for the division he was assigned to. His warrant card no. was 400055. There are no records of a demotion and it has been suggested by the Met Police Museum that his ill health may have been the cause. Alexander's death as a result of his consumption is recorded in the Commissioner's Returns of Death of Police Officers. His death is also mentioned in the issue of the Metropolitan Police Officer for 19th November 1870 where after the entry the following appears......"pay to 17th". A nice touch.

Kirkden, Tannadice, Forfar Parish's Forfarshire

Alexander McHardy, son of John McHardy and Margaret Dauney, and Elspeth McHardy

Alexander McHardy born 1843 Kirkden Parish, Forfarshire (married Euphemia Lowson of Forfar on 28/10/1879, died 16/02/1935, buried Forfar Cemetery). No known children from marriage. See Me on the Photograph's - other family members page.

From the 1851 census Alexander junior seems to have spent his early years in Kirkden Parish, Forfarshire with his maternal grandparents James McHardy and Ann Wattie. They were originally a Corgarff couple who had moved south with their family. Later children of their marriage were born in Kirkden Parish. This James McHardy was of the  McHardy family who farmed at Delavine in Corgarff. Alexander junior's mother appears to have had another child called Janet Fraser who was also lodged with James and Ann, and is aged 2.

From 1861 onwards Alexander junior can be found living with his father at Tannadice, Forfarshire. By this time his father is a police officer. However on the 1841 census his father had been a farm servant to James McHardy and Ann Wattie.

Info. Wanted I would be very interested to know the whereabouts of Alexander senior between 1841 and 1861.
