McHardys of a Higher Calling

McHardys of a Higher Calling

During his ministry a new church was built in 1804. "Few buildings have resounded to more eloquence than that little Highland kirk. Dr. Norman Macleod, Principal Caird, Principal Tulloch, Dr. MacGregor, and many others filled it's pulpit, and no preachers ever had more attentive and appreciative listeners than the occupants of the royal pew who, when at Balmoral, were regular attendants at the parish church. Queen Victoria has testified to the pleasure and comfort derived from what she heard there, and the Prince Consort liked the Scotttish services, which he used to say reminded him of the simple Lutheran forms to which in his early youth he had been accustomed." He marr. 18th July 1778, Clementina (died s.p. 2nd Aug. 1822), daugh, of George Forbes of Culquhany, and Margaret, daugh. of William Forbes of Buchan. Corgarff's pre-Reformation church was at Corryhoul, but this had long since fallen into disuse, and the 18th century mass centre was elsewhere. "Beside the cornyard of Ordachoy is the site of some old building, said to have been a chapel".

Ordachoy was the family home of William McHardy, alias McLeod, who was priest at Braemar when the Corgarff chapel was built. In 1788 he left what must have been a thoroughly Catholic household to study at Valladolid. He was fully ten years in Spain before being ordained, and must have had his course interupted by the tuberculosis which was to kill him in 1809.

During McHardy's five year connection with Braemar, Ordachoy changed hands. Lachlan McIntosh made a tantalisingly brief reference to his former mass centre in a letter which is mainly about the developing problems of tenure at Clashenruich, Glengairn: "In Corgarff the house is sold to the apostate brother and we are set adrift". It seems that the place where Catholics met with the Glengairn priest had come under the control of a McHardy who changed his allegiance.

The Long Arm of the McHardy

Even the constabularies of Scotland have been hit with the history bug. Dedicated souls are recording the members of the Police forces from their inception in the mid 1800's, and even before in the days of the night watchmen. In searching for my own family members I have contacted a number of Police Forces and record below some of the findings from the early days of law enforcement. A lot of McHardys became gamekeepers and it would appear to be the same about policemen; very much a case of poacher turned gamekeeper.

Aberdeen City Police - I am indebted to Constable Geoff Marsden at Grampian Police in Aberdeen for the following. I was searching for a William McHardy at this time. I did not find the one I wanted but he provided the following details.

1) William McHardy, born Braemar 14/11/1836 who had been a gamekeeper. He served in the police from 05/06/1854 until 15/06/1898. (Note: See Aboyne Kirkyard Monumental Inscriptions).

2) William A. McHardy, born at Midmar 01/01/1897, also a gamekeeper, who joined 31/03/1919 and served until 25/08/1948. He had collar number 145.

Allo allo allo..........what have we here then ?

Forfarshire Police - I am indebted to retired Constable Stewart Harris, Honorary Curator of the Tayside Police Museum. There are no early records of Forfarshire police listing all the constables. I was looking for the area around Forfar itself and Mr Harris turned up an old paybook for the north Forfarshire Area which ran from 1847 to 1854. It does not state where the constables were working or any of their personal details. The following are the McHardy entries.

1) Alexander McHardy - appears in paybook 1847 to 1854. [Born Corgarff 1811, son of John McHardy and his wife Margaret Dauney of Easter Corryhoul. Burried Tannadice Graveyard, Forfarshire].

2) Charles McHardy - appears in the paybook 1847 to 1851, and 1854. {Born Corgarff 1807, son of John McHardy and his wife Margaret Dauney of Easter Corryhoul. Burried Dunnichen Graveyard, Forfarshire].

3) John McHardy - appears in the paybook in 1854.

4) F. McHardy - appears in the paybook in 1853.

Glasgow Police - I am indebted to Dr. Paul Hopkins of Glasgow City Archives at The Mitchell Library for the following. In searching for George McHardy, a member of the Corryhoul family from Corgarff in the Parish of Strathdon, West Aberdeenshire, Dr. Hopkins also very kindly provided the following. I have recorded the archive reference alongside in brackets. We can see that George joined the police twice.

1) George McHardy, c. Corgarff, 1826, first entry 1 28/01/1856 aged 30, second entry 19/09/1858, retired 11/03/1890. (Ref SR22/52/2 no/91).

2) Alexander McHardy, b. Huntly 1879, entry 1900 aged 21. (Ref. SR22/55/19 no.235)

3) Alexander Coutts McHardy, b. Strathdon 1892, entry 1912 aged 19. (Ref. SR22/55/23 no.594 - also two entries in volumes on probationers).

4) James McHardy, b. Crathie 1859, entry 1883 aged 24. (Ref. SR22/55/11 no.305 - also one probationers entry).

5) James McHardy, b. Crathie 1862, entry 1886 aged 24 (Ref. SR22/56/15 no.6076) - same individual as above with mistake in date ?

6) John McHardy, b. Tomintoul 1852, entry 1875 aged 23. (SR22/55/8 no.458)

7) Peter Charles McHardy, b. Aboyne 1865, entry 1886 aged 21. (SR22/55/12 n.227).

8) Allan McHardy, b. Kirkmichael, Banffshire, 1862, entry 1882 aged 20 (Ref. SR22/55/11 no.241 - also one probationers entry).

9) James McHardy, b. Dowells, Elgin, 1887, entry 1908 aged 21. (Ref. SR22/55/22 no.361 - also two probationers entries).

10) John Leeth McHardy, b. St. Cyrus, Kincardineshire, 1907, entry 1929 aged 21. (Ref. SR22/55/27 no.430 - also one probationesr report).

Renfrewshire Police - records resting at Mitchell Library, Glasgow.

1) Peter McHardy, b. Aberdeenshire 1848, entry 1869 aged 21. SR22/89/2 no.70)

2) Arthur McHardy, b. Strathlone (probably Strathdon) 1835, entry 1859 aged 24.

Lanarkshire Police - I pulled this from the net.

The Lanarkshire Miners : a social history of their trade unions 1775-1974, Alan B. Campbell, John Donald Publishers 1979, ISBN 0859760480

(i) Brown's Square (Coatbridge) claimed a police constable in 1883 "was where Catholics congregated and met. The majority are Catholics in that place."

(ii) Commander McHardy of the Coatbridge police reported in October 1883 that an Orange procession "was somewhat interfered with by the Catholics in Steel Street, in the Roman Catholic quarter of the town."

(iii) Commander McHardy also mentioned the district of Sunnyside which was "looked upon as a strong Protestant quarter".

Essex Police - ( http://www.essex.police.uk/pages/offbeat/o_bt.htm )

Back in Time: A History of Essex Police

How It All Began: Essex was one of the first counties to make use of the powers under the Police Act of 1839 and in 1840 the Essex County Constabulary came into being.

The first chief constable was Admiral John Bunch Bonnemaison McHardy, a retired naval officer who was to rule over the force for 41 years until his retirement at the age of 81.

Initially there were only 100 constables and 15 superintendents to police the county. The rank of inspector appeared later that year, but it was to be 1855 before the rank of sergeant was introduced.

This set of Volumes can be found in the Central Library in Aberdeen. The data in them was taken from the local publications The Aberdeen Free Press, The Aberdeen Journal, and The People's Journal.
