McHardy - Pollable Persons Aberdeenshire 1696

These are some more notes I made years ago. I hope they are of some interest to you all. The money you see below as "£" is the one-time Scottish Pound. The format is the same as pre-decimalization UK Sterling i.e. pounds-shillings-pence. (20 shillings make one pound, 12 pennies make one shilling).

List of Pollable Persons within the Shire of Aberdeen 1696

Poll taxes were imposed on Scotland between 1693 and 1699 on all adults except those dependent on charity. The List of Pollable Persons within the Shire of Aberdeen 1696, Volume First, printed by William Bennet, Aberdeen, M.DCCC.XLIV, provides us with an early record of where McHardy families were living. Note some of the old parish names. These records will help you go back before the census records and in some cases the parish records. You will also note the variations in spelling of the surname.

I started off recording all the names on the land including landlords, tenants, subtenants, cottars etc. but as I progressed this was shortened to only the McHardys (a mealtime must have been looming ! ). The Parishes were in the "Kincardine, and Alford Presbetries".

Corriehoul was paying a total of £16 6/ Scots in Poll Tax. You will note the four different spellings of the surname. It is my belief that McCadie and McAdie are McHardy spelled differently in this case as an Edward McHardy died at Corryhoul in 1713. There are other McCadie mentions in the Parish as follows :-

Findlay McHardy of Daldownie

In 1675 John McHardy, his son was at Daldownie. He was portioner of Crathie in 1696, and married Isabel Farquharson, youngest sister of the "Black Colonel".

The croft of Daldownie being two oxengates, is entered in the Poll Book "pertaining" to Edward McHardy.

Edward McHardy, Portioner of Crathinard.

The same man who had held Daldownie in 1635. In 1665 he married Elspet Symond, and they had sasine on Crathienard, 27th October, 1665. Janet McHardy, neice and heiress to Edward McHardy, appears in the Poll Book of 1696, as well as Edward.

James McHardy of Crathie.

The McHardy were a well known family long settled in Braemar and neighbourhood.

John and Edward owned Daldownie, four miles north of Balmoral, and Crathienard in Crathie.

On 25th August, 1665, John Farquharson of Allargue disponed the lands of Crathie to John McHardy and his first wife, Janet Farquharson of Westown, in liferent. John McHardy and his second wife Margaret Auchterlony, had a sasine on these lands, on the occasion of their subsequent marriage. [Note: Allargue is in Corgarff. John Farquharson was of the Achriachan Farquharson family, (Auchriachan is close to where the village of Tomintoul now stands in Banffshire).]

John Farquharson was a notary, and was employed by John Farquharson, the "Black Colonel" in negotiations after the murderous raid on Braickley. He still appears in the Poll Book of 1696.

p193.

Jon MacHardy of Kilchlyn

In 1626 the Earl of Mar had a dispute with Lord Elphinstone about Kinchine. Robert McHardy was there 1696.

The Lordship of Strathavon, Extracts of Tenants - 18th Century

The following extracts come from the The Lordship of Strathavon - Tomintoul under the Gordons, by Victor Gaffney, printed for the Third Spalding Club, Aberdeen, 1960. Strathavon is in Banffshire, and includes Tomintoul, Kirkmichael & Glenlivet Parishes to the best of my knowledge. It is evident that in most cases in these records the subtenants and servants have not been mentioned. It does however give pointers to the whereabouts of some of our surname.

Again only the extracts under each heading mentioning McHardy have been copied out.

Note: The use of the word Glenbucket in the following extracts refers to a person, not the place on Donside (although that branch of the Gordon family originated there).
