"I have some friends at Infinity Ward and I can't tell you how happy I was to be at Insomniac when I heard that news [of West and Zampella's sacking]," Biegel told CVG sister mag PSM3.
"I was totally horrified for my friends and called every one of them asking what the hell was going on. It reiterated to me how good it is to be working at a wholly independent developer where we call the shots."
Poor show Tim. The fellow being interviewed does not state it's "best" to be an independent studio the way your headliner indicates. Misleading, then again that's par for course these days on CVG, isn't it?
As for the topic of whether it's "best" to be an independent studio or not, that would seem to depend on one's criteria. Pros and cons after all.
Pros of being independent: Complete control of IP and development process. You are your own boss (if you own the development studio that is).
Cons of being independent: The financial burden is not shared with a usually larger publisher/owner. Also, there are often fewer resources available to realize the project in development. As boss of your own business the burden of work and financial worries/responsibilities for yourself, and possibly all the people working for you, follow you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (if you care and are a conscientious boss; if not, the company may not be yours for much longer).
Off the top of my head I can think of one developer that appears to have an unusually strong position within the publisher that bought it: BioWare. Given the placement of BioWare's two founders as vice-presidents on EA's board they likely have far more clout regarding their own projects within EA than IW's founders did within Activision. In BioWare's case it may well have gotten the best of both worlds: Still at the helm of its own IP projects, yet now with the financial and logistical muscle of EA.

I think it was entirely fair to infer the headline from the quotes made by Insomniac. In comparison to IW's situation, they certainly do feel that being independent is the better option and made that very clear in the interview.
Resistance 3 is supposedly in the works. Which is a SONY owned franchise.
And? Sony can stop them from making Resistance games but nothing else. Their jobs are completely safe, presuming that they have other good game ideas.
I would say the Resistance games are very average indeed, they don't offer anything unique; they aren't technically bad or anything just bland. Saying that i picked up the first earlier this year and graphically the years have not been kind to it.
I Agree , the way the guys from IW have been treated is nothing short of a disgrace ... the amount of money that they have made for activsion in unreal .... Its a shame that the case will proberly not get to court ... then we would actually know wat exactly Activision were up 2
Also Sony own the publishing rights for Resistance , they do not own the franchise lol !!!
I seem to remember that the IW dudes started off with Medal of Honour many moons ago and went off the make CoD? Ironic now that they could all be heading back there to EA? Maybe CoD will suffer and MoH will be the beneficiary?
Could it be that Activision have made a big mistake regarding their CoD franchise? Having said that MW2 wasn't that hot anyway.......
I doubt that the ex MW guys will get back to Medel of honour as the single player is beng made by EALA and the mutiplayer id being done by DICE , who made Battlefield 2
Still , it would make it a better game if they were invlolved
oops, forgot about that....but maybe future versions? the guys who set up IW are no doubt good at what they do and no ones goings to pass there expertise up, er except activison......
