Assassins Creed 3 could have WWII setting - Ubi

"We've had discussions" about WWII, female Assassin, says developer
Ubisoft has "had discussions" about setting the next Assassin's Creed game in World War II - with a female assassin.

Speaking to Xbox World 360 in its latest issue, producer Sébastien Puel said it would make sense for a Woman to do the dirty work in the female-run economies of WWII-era France and England.

"We've had discussions on that very topic," Puel said when quizzed on the possibility of a female assassin. "It could be really interesting but we'd need to find the right time period and place for that.

"Where would that make sense? We don't want to just decide we want to change and have a female hero as the first inspiration is always the time period, but if you're talking about, say, World War II the economies in England and France were run by women because the men were off fighting.

"So maybe in this context you were a woman in England during WWII. Why not? Nothing prevents us from doing it," he said.

Plans for the Assassin's Creed series were originally focused on a trilogy of games, but now Ubisoft says it has a larger focus. "What's so great about Assassin's Creed is that we can just expand and expand," creative director Patrice Fortier told XBW.

"I'm often asked if we're doing a third game after ACII... I mean, we could do 35 of these."

Please don't. Half of one was way too much for me.

AC's technology at rendering crowds would produce a fantastic recreation of the D-Day landings. Don't think there were too many women walking around on the beach that day though!

Hitler Assasination anyone?

Wouldnt be surprised if they go for WW1 first.

I think an Assassin in the American Civil War time period would be pretty interesting. Could play out as Assassins vs. Templats/ Unionists vs. Conferates. Could all lead up to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
cian84 on 13 Oct '09
Doesn't that seem EXACTLY like Velvet Assassin? I hope WWII isn't used. Firstly as it's been played out so many times and secondly I'd prefer if guns and long range weapons were kept out of AC. I mean throwing knives were cool but if rifles, etc. made their way in it'd just be a standard third person shoot-em-up.
McSwifty on 13 Oct '09
WWI would be far more interesting than WWII as a setting to be honest
Terribly_Mauled on 13 Oct '09
God, WW2 has been done to death. There are far more interesting locations and times. Ancient feudal Japan would be a great setting. Medieval Europe. The Roman Empire. The American Revolution. These would be far more interesting and unusual settings. Hell, even American Colonial times could be interesting (although not great in terms of hiding places).

Anything much newer than that and you're covering familiar ground. The Middle East was an unusual locale for the first game, likewise the Venice setting of the sequel.
Dajmin on 13 Oct '09
>Ancient feudal Japan would be a great setting. Medieval Europe. The Roman Empire.

Have you tried the Total War series? ;P
beemoh on 13 Oct '09
I agree with ancient/fuedal Japan setting.Would like to see the AC engine used for ninja shenanigans as I feel Tenchu series never quite hit the mark.
GoatBoyUK on 13 Oct '09
A Victorian London setting would blow my mind.

A Victorian London setting would blow my mind.

How about if this descendant was misinterpreted as Jack the Ripper?

There you go Ubi - game, right there. Very Happy
Terribly_Mauled on 13 Oct '09
Have you tried the Total War series? ;P
Sure have Smile

But playing from a sneaking-round-army-trying-to-assassinate-leaders-without-getting-the-Roman-army-on-your-head perspective would be great Smile

And there's already a Jack the Ripper game on the way. An assassin wouldn't be suspected of being the Ripper, because an assassin wouldn't just randomly kill prossies Smile
Dajmin on 14 Oct '09
Who says it was random?.... Razz
The_KFD_Case on 14 Oct '09
Having a WW1 setting would be cool in my mind because for some reason it made me think of the hospital level from Eternal Darkness. But personally I think they should stick with a guy. Not because I'm sexist but I think the Altair-type character is what suits the series best.
dark_gamer on 14 Oct '09
This is really intriguing, it would be the perfect setting for a WWII assassin game. It has sorta been done before, but AC as a game and the game engine would make such a game complete.
Ketil on 14 Oct '09
I totally agree with a Victorian London setting. Feudal Japan wouldn't be up to much, a few ninja assasins and bamboo shoots?? yeah really original.

I also think an Aztec setting fighting with columbus and co would really suit the as creed franchise.
Ellscore on 14 Oct '09
Victorian London has not been done enough...fantastic idea with the Jack the Ripper take..especially if its a female assassin.

I think that they should make games for the 6 statues from AC2, they "supposedly" assassinated some of the most well known people in history... It would stick to the story better than just randomly going from men with swords to women with guns like in the WW2 idea. Idea
Kryme69 on 29 Nov '09
... they somewhat give a hint that Desmond will have to live with the world wide known 2012. it would be coll if he had to go back in time to actually stop that, instead of going to a game in WW2
patpatpat95 on 9 Dec '09
they cood use a russia thing i am an official game designer Wink
gamedesigner23 on 24 Dec '09
Japan settings!? Ok I can understand if ur a samuria but no ninja, that's been done already million times before if, besides freaken ninjas have litte daggers. Where the creativety of a sword. Also I with the people who say a world war 1 setting would be better, but it wouldn't be the best. Take off the cliff hanger, I want to know what the rest is. Thank god that ubisoft made a good cliff hanger thaey loose sales quick. READ THIS UBISOFT!!!!!!!
James Brookes on 29 Dec '09
I think its only fair if the do a girl assasin i mean it would be cool being a girl and all. There have already been to guys altair and ezio a girl now that would make me wana play the game more and being set in ww2 would be great for the fact that women were mostly in power~
beppybear on 3 Jan '10
i had the idea..... because it has been based around 500 year time gaps why not have the next one in the napoleonic wars between france and england the final mission could be to sneak on board a navy vessel of the english and kil lord nelson or a roman england in which you have to go to places like newcastle to greet the emporor hadrian and the assassin could be a pict(scottich) warrior this could bring on an idea of the templars could have been around longer than we thought but make a few of these then in 2012 they coul make one where desmond hs to destroy te templar reign in the world in that time therefore bringing in th idea of the 2012 theory based on what the god said in the chamber in number 2 but i like the idea of the jack the ripper one maybe tie it in with number 2 with the prostitutes that help you maybe thy split off and try and kill the assassins or betray the asassins this could be the motif for the murders
jtgazza on 4 Jan '10
I think maybe have the game from different character points/different timelines such as WWII,Desmond, some other character. Plus, just make the game longer the games are to short.
gahljm on 5 Jan '10
Assassin's Creed 2 was BRILLIANT! The Truth was the best for me and whether the 3rd is set in WW2 or in the Napoleonic Wars matters not. Cool What does matter in how they construct it because The Truth is where it is at. All those things that you learnt, assuming that you did actually manage to break the codes, was amazing. They need to keep it so. We need to know more about the Adam and Eve segment that we 'witnessed' from Subject 16. Do not be surprised if we be assassinating in the 'Biblical' age or even in Desmond's time due to the fact of what the alien/ghost or whatever she was told him. Like the second followed off from the first the third has to follow on from the second, it is after all set like a story. Razz the NWO is being exposed and doing it via a game is sheer brilliance. Oh and I totally agree that it needs to be longer, I was thoroughly disappointed when I completed it albeit I was up 20 hours a day for a week!
MJack on 6 Jan '10
If Assassin's Creed III's setting is WW2 then Assassin's Creed is ruined, the whole essence of being an assassin in Assassin's Creed is the old age of using knives and sneaking up from behind a person to strike... If now in Assassin's Creed 3 you are using a gun or a sniper to kill someone from long-range? That's just stupid. I absolutely LOVED Assassin's Creed I and Assassin's Creed II, they were just brilliant both the stories were perfect and i bet the story of the third will be just as good, but... guns and stuff? i mean that's just hitman style. If ASCD III was somewhere around 1500-1600 that would be great!
Norik on 7 Jan '10
I do agree with that comment. The essence of Assassin's Creed is the throwing knives and sword etc. However in AC2 Leonardo did make the pistol for Ezio, so is it really a big leap to go to WW2? Saying that, I feel that The Age of Reason should be the next era we go into. That would be really interesting. I know most of you think of this from just a killing, fighting etc point of view but the info they give you is just unbelievable. Hope there is The Truth in the next one, as long as they have that then I can handle what ever time period. Razz
MJack on 7 Jan '10
i think when they come out with the 3rd game they should keep it as a guy cus of the first and second the reason y is in the halo games with odst they didnt stick with master cheif and not very many people liked the game
bigdaddyb94 on 8 Jan '10
I'm sorry and I know its sexest but I don't think I have ever really gotten hooked on a game that had a female character as the main hero.

I know I'm an A hole for thinking that way, but its just how I am. I can't even think of any major games with a female hero besides Velvet Assassin and that game did just ok in my opinion. (I don't count metriod cause you are in a badass suit for the game).

A couple of the Final Fantasy games had lead females, but also had lead males if I'm not mistaken. And when your one of your biggest fan bases is a bunch of teenage boys who want to be badass like altair or ezio and you have a female character they can't relate to that.

I mean I do think you will probably see an increase in sales from women who play video games, but I also see a bigger decrease in guys who play it. Like somebody said about Master Chief; half the reason why the game was so well liked was because of how freakin awesome master chief was.

As to the location.. I agree with what somebody said about being against having guns and other long range weapons, because then you are turning it into another 3rd person shooter, thereby losing its uniqueness. Someone said American colonies or something around that time, and that would be cool. I would also honestly like to see some more action from Desmund himself than from his ancestors. I mean, I still want some ancestor action, but in AC2 there was about 3 times out of the Animus and I felt that was wayyy to short.

And as a guy, when you hear a some guy grunting from jumping from this ledge to that one adds to the realism of the game.. but hearing a girl try to do it you tend to lose that affect. I just don't think it will work

Its just my opinion.
Crim X on 10 Jan '10
ok love ac but yeah if i have to play in WWII or any war that is with in the last 200 years im not going to get the game. For me the game is all about the past in AC2 there was the pistol and it was fun to play with, but i cant stand playing shooter games. If i was making the game i would have it based a little before AC2 maybe during the late crusades sometime when the dominicans and the inserection (dont mind the spelling) was happening. that way it leaves it in the past like we all like and its main weapons are blades. As for having a female lead look ladies i love Lara Croft but if I was a guy getting put into the memory of a female the last thing on my mind would be killing people. fyi im 26 and married so no teenage jokes.
And with it beinging during the inserection the religous undertones are still there and there is still a reason for desmond to fight templars
thorius on 12 Jan '10
ok i love AC2 but a WWII AC will have to be something to make it stand out from the rest of the games set in that period an i bleve it too erly for them to set it in wwll as how the hell will it fit in to the rest of the games story line an the end of ac2 she told him to hunt dow the next relic so i belie the most overs way to go is south america in the Spanish explores to the new world as there long lost temples there an i can be him sourcing for the temple in real time an looking to the past for the clues to get it an there was a grate civilization there that got wipe out to early so you can go some where with the story Razz
fraz132 on 13 Jan '10
i think they should do it about how the assassins and the templars started and yeh i think they should seet it in medieval time
fffmrules on 13 Jan '10
Some of the ideas posted here are quite good i think such as the jack the ripper and american civil war ideas.

I definately think they should take the story to England this time for sure.

The dates could also be almost immediatley after the end of AC 2 by using events like Guy Fawkes trying to blow up parliment.

Then maybe James the 1st being the head templar who now holds a piece of eden and Cromwell tries to get him off the throne because of that. Maybe Cromwell an assassin? Then you could always throw in the plot twist that now that Cromwell controls parliment after executing James 1st he turns evil.

Thats my own idea
seif12 on 13 Jan '10
This has just opened my eyes to the beauty of the Assassin's Creed series:

History is so vast and interesting you can set it in any time period and use factual historical events to make the game interesting. The fact that it is set in the past just makes this game awesome. If the first was set in the present day or the future the game wouldn't make it past game 3. As long as they changed the gameplay slightly then I would be happy to buy any Assassain's Creed game as long as they are in a different period of time.

I'm gonna sound nerdy here, but it's extremely interesting playing a game set in a realistic history. It's like about 10 history lessons, just extremely entertaining. Just brilliant. The engine they use for this should be used over and over again so I can play through the centuries of world history we have.

Also, some of the ideas are brilliant. Jack the Ripper is by far the best. Everyone he murdered could have been a Templar and have a connection, and it's perfect for the style of storyline that the Assassain's Creed games have.

They could also think about the Witchhunts, perhaps Templars messing about with Artefacts could be believed as Witchcraft, and the Assassin could be a Witchhunter, but there's a lot of possibilities.

I will be really, really, really disappointed if the engine they used is binned after 3. It could make some brilliant history simulations.
Fractal on 17 Jan '10
it's quite obvious that ACIII should NOT! be set before the second installment because if it was, then we would lose a large amount of the varied weapons and gadgets, such as the poison blade, smoke bombs, and the hidden pistol. all immense attributes to the game. i would like to see the game set in the late 1700's to the earl 1800's. and see desmond still learning the skills of the assassins and eventually starting his quest to stop the templars. alternatively it would be a great twist if desmond went after vidic and came across a whole band of templar leaders, which he had to assassinate over the course of the game.
just a few ideas

Japan would be the best place:

Storyline Link

The roots of ninjutsu stretch back over 2,000 years, but most historians generally agree that ninjutsu started with Ikkai around the year 1000. Ikkai was a warrior from China who fled to Japan and ended up in the remote area of Iga. The knowledge he brought with him of Chinese warrior techniques and strategies was a spark that, combined with the indigenous Japanese warrior knowledge, created a new method that would become known as ninjutsu a few centuries later.

Weapons

they have access to all the technologies of Ezio plus more and many tools like:

Ropes and grappling hooks were common, and were tied to the belt. A collapsible ladder is illustrated in the Bansenshukai, featuring spikes at both ends to anchor the ladder.Spiked or hooked climbing gear worn on the hands and feet also doubled as weapons and finally, the Kunai.

Weapons included the Katana, Shuriken instead of thowing knives, the kusarigama (look it up on google images)grenades, blowguns, poisoned darts, acid-splurting tubes and caltrops.

Japan also offers beautiful scenary and historical events (Mongol Invasion, and european exploration of Japan.)

I do wish it would be Japan based or maybe even AC3 you are in europe short while after the time you play as Ezio and get to go to Japan. So there they could do AC3 not just based in 1 place, but i just hope they make 1 in Japan... QuestionRolling EyesQuestionRolling EyesQuestion

Other suggestions:

Russian Revolution
discovery of the Americas
Mongol invasion of Persia and Europe

At the end of the day whenever assassins creed 3 is set it will truly be brilliant
radders24 on 29 Jan '10
was i the only one that noticed that the mountain in the background of "the truth video" is mt. kilimanjaro? so maybe it takes place back in adam and eve times and you play as subject 16/ desmonds ancestor to try and stop the war between TWCB( those who came before) and humans, because as minerva said, they were too distracted by the war too realize the impending doom. and you have to remember that desmonds time is set in 2012. so maybe desmond/ ezio/altair/ who ever the hell he's gonna be, is going to have to travel to africa to find eden, which might either be a safe place, or it might contain another vault with another "god" in it that tells you how to survive or maybe prevent the upcoming catastrophe.

that's just my two cents.
auditore7 on 29 Jan '10
since it is mt. kilimanjaro in the background. you have to think symbolism when interpreting the video. the most obvious is that eve and adam running away with the "apple". the next is that the whole complex they are running away from is the "garden of eden" since this is where the pieces of eden are manufactured. you can also see in the video when eve stops to look through the workshop window that the workers are under the influence of the pieces of eden, you can see the cloaked firgure holding the apple. and lastly, at the very end you see the binary code, which when translated spells EDEN. soo assuming it is mt. kilimanjaro in the background, i think its pretty safe to say that eden is most likely located in africa. again, these are all assumptions.
auditore7 on 29 Jan '10
I don't mean to burst an bubbles, but this game is not traveling through actual time; you live the past through the memories of people in your bloodline. That's why if you did anything that ezio or altaiir wouldn't have done you'd desynchronize with your ancestor. Unfortunately, that means you can't go back and change anything, like prevent the war between the 'gods' and the humans. Now, that's not
taking into account the pieces of Eden and stuff... Although if those worked it wouldn't make sense why Everything wasn't changed before Desmond.
Nomad512 on 30 Jan '10
I think that skipping straight to the future wouldn't be the best idea. I still wanna hang on to the historic playing fields. I was hoping something different. In my opinion, anything in the middle east setting=assassin's creed 1/prince of persia. Anything in japan=ninjas. I COULD see it taking place in WWI but i dont know what to expect (as for the weapons that we'll be able to use). Changing Desmond's race (though ancestors) wouldn't make too much sense unless ubisoft came up with something that made it work. If that happened then China would be a pretty cool place. I could see more assassins than ninjas running around there.
The middle east and italy were interesting places to choose. Back to the China stuff, I could see the architecture being as beautiful as the first two games and the armor design to be appealing as well (as for the language....if they ever do something Asian then it's best to keep regular English, just so the characters can be taken seriously). I'd prefer these two setting (China and WWI), but if ubisoft came up with a better idea I'd be more than happy.
kittenmittens on 1 Feb '10
No matter the timeline, the draw for this game is because of
1: Basically being a badass, climbing the buildings and killing bad guys with some very impressive maneuvers.
2: Historical realism. Connecting history to the apple of eden idea. "I mean the trip to the moon idea blew my mind"
As long as these are still intact, i don't think it matters what they come up with. I would personally like to use Desmond more. He had some better killing animations and I can imagine climbing skyscrapers in modern day New York City or something like that. Sure people have guns and all, but that can be simply eliminated by just not allowing Desmond to utilize them. But then again, the assassins say, everything is permitted.
Either way F it. I just want to hear some more crazy conspiracy theories and kill bad guys with jaw dropping moves.
Pathrat41 on 8 Feb '10
damn you know that would actually make sense, because in the AC universe a swarm of conspiracy has revolved around hitler and his hatred for the jews and i know alot... we had a 3 hour long convo about this... its so real
WARcAsh4 on 11 Feb '10
look you guys i dont think they posted this for us to give "ideas" a crappy one at that but still its THEIR game, not ours... they have done a great job with 1 and 2, i like the cliffhangers they keep me interested. Whatever they choose i shall still play the game
WARcAsh4 on 11 Feb '10
They should make it Aztec. Imagine what endless possibilities there would be - Tenochtitlan, Jungle, Aztec Pyramids, Aztec Villages, Assassinating Montezuma, Preventing Templars from getting there etc. Smile
Friedebarth on 12 Feb '10
Ac 3 would be good when Ghengis Khan invades China and it would make sense because int he codex pages Altair did mention it. It would also be coll in japan or maybe tribal africa, anywhere as long as it doesn't have guns because it would ruin the whole hidden blade thing Rolling Eyes
