Dylan, Bob - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan | Buy a poster of this band!
In a truly Gutherie-esque style Dylan begins his songwriting career with a classic album of ballads and blues. Long before Bob started bleeding or got tangled up in anything he was just a kid from Minnesota with a guitar who didn't know how to hide that he wears his heart on his sleeve. The LP blends all the tangents of Dylan's mind in a perfect 13 song snapshot of what its like to have a soul and be young. Let us begin our exploration..
Freewheelin' contains a couple of folk numbers that were sure to score Bob plenty of protest chicks back in the 60's. "Blowin in the Wind" & "Masters of War" encapsulate the idealism and cynicism towards society that plays such a large role in Dylan's future songwriting. Each are simple and moving pieces that inspire and instigate thought.
The album becomes essential when Bob begins his talking blues storytelling. "Talking World War III Blues" rambles on with joy and sharpness as Dylan walks about in a post-war goofy setting. Pair this relaxed journey with the harrowingly apocalyptic "A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall" and enjoy the dichotomy with which Dylan takes on the ideas of the socially conscious 60's youth.
Bob's songwriting of female induced sleeplesness shines on "Girl from the North Country". In this sweeping, wrenching reflection on a past lover Dylan wraps all of his 19 years into a short song of longing. Together with "Don't think twice, its alright", Bob tells both sides of a losing relationships in a touching manner.
The other tracks round out the record with similar styles and provide a great, truly listenable album. It seems as though Dylan's views on life are contradictory and coexist in a decidedly human way. Play this album once, then play it again. Then again. You will enjoy it because Dylan does what he does best, provide a friend to identify with. When one combines the serious tracks with the rambling songs out comes a meaningful personal conversation with Bob. You and him think the same thoughts and dream the same way. Enjoy this album, because before the truckloads of cigarettes and years of stress from critics and fans Dylan was simply freewheelin.
