Bob Dylan in the ATL |
On the first night of last month's Atlanta Music Midtown festival, May 5-7th, Bob Dylan and his killer band brought out the noise and the funk when they rocked through 2 hours of Dylan classics. As I waded through the sea of dirty young fans who were excited because, "Like Bob Dylan smokes pot", I was praying that Bob would put on a classic show. I figured he would be pumped in the wake of his Oscar win (Best Song for "Things Have Changed" from Wonderboys) and put on a tight show to rival whatever happened in Newport back in '65. Although that bar may have been a bit too high, Bob came to play.
He opened with a 5 song acoustic set that surpassed the quality of his Grammy winning Unplugged concert. Imagine the Unplugged show but with a joyful rather than aloof Bob. After two settling-in songs and with the audience pumped and attentions at their max he suprised me with a beautiful "Desolation Row". His vocals were heart-wrenching and much clearer than when I saw him last. (Nov 98) They rose smoothly and emotionally throughout the climax of the song. While most of the crowd stood stunned by Desolations brilliance, Bob began to heat things up with an excellent, super extended harp solo on "Tangled Up In Blue". He played harp for 2-3 minutes straight and did some of that stiff chicken walk he likes. I began to fall into a pleasant stupor, subdued by the acousticness of the evening. Then the band pulled out their electrics.
