Family Queries

Joan Marshall is seeking assistance in finding more about the ancestors and the parents of Henry James BARTLETT, of whom she had nothing useful
We offered her data from the 1851 Census, Osmington:HO 107/1857, Folio 28, Item no. 26 of Osmington Parish:
John BARTLETT/Head/Married/26y/Domestic Servant/Born in Dorset
Jane Bartlett/Wife/Married/28y/Born in Dorset; George G. BARTLETT/Son/16mths
Joan agrees that this information provides her with useful data to work on. She would be delighted to hear more of possible ancestors and descendants of John and Jane Bartlett from other researchers.

June Newman is looking for details of the Brook family who lived at Hinton St George SOM around 1800 as listed above. While she has information in broad terms, more detailed information about the family would assist in extending the family history.
Eva Annie Brook {Newman] 1936.jpg - 26168 Bytes This is a 1936 Photograph of Eva Annie Newman nee Brook mentioned above, the Grandmother of June's husband.
Such photos can materially help researchers in identifing a family member. June has some of the more recent 20th century information which she would be prepared to share. For example, Eva Newman's Grandmother Ann Brook died on 8 Mar 1900. The death certificate had the informant as L. Lloyd, Granddaughter present at her death. That person was Louisa, daughter of Eva's Aunt Jane, married to John Lloyd in 1884 in Wales.
June is also searching for any reference to John MEADE (b.c1705; var.MEAD,MEADES) who married Ann SPEARING at Gillingham DOR on 5 Jan 1730. They lived and had three children at West Knoyle WIL - Mary (bp.7 Nov 1737), David (bp.9 Jul 1740) and Ann (bp.5 Jun 1743).
It is the connection with Hornblotton SOM that is being sought. That a MEAD family was living at Hornblotton SOM is indicated by the marriage by license (Mother's consent, dated 26 May 1726) of Sarah MEAD to Matthew LONGMAN (Yeoman), both of Hornblotton SOM. Could Sarah be a sibling of John MEADE? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Ethel Close is seeking more information on Benjamin GALTON, son of Benjamin and Sarah Galton. Benjamin's father was a Rope Maker by trade and is Ethel's 5xGGF. Ethel has a considerable background of certificates and Census data from which she has found information on most of his siblings but Benjamin the son is still very elusive.
Ethel would welcome any assistance in finding more on Benjamin Galton to fill a difficult gap.

Pamela Miles has traced the PRATER family back to a John Prater (1819-1875) who was a smith and lived in Bristol. His father's name is given as John Prater who was a farmer but no trace of him has been found. As a farmer it seems likely that he came from Somerset or Gloucestershire. Information on these two John Praters would be most welcome.
They are also trying to trace a Joseph Prater who was a witness at the wedding of Louise, a daughter of John Prater (smith), in 1879.
They know about the Praters of Nunney SOM and wonder if there is a link somewhere.
Any help in sorting out the difficulties experienced by Pamela would be most appreciated.

Richard Blanchard is seeking information on Samuel and Ann Rossiter, their son John (baptised Bitton SOM in 1815) and any other children they may have had. It is possible that Samuel was a collier working at the Kingswood mines, where many miners had become non-conformists, especially under the influence of men such as Whitfield and Wesley.
Richard believes that Ann Rossiter was buried at Whitfield Tabernacle in Kingswood in 1827 at age 66 years. This could make her birth year as 1761 and she had lived at Mangotsfield at the time of her death.
Their son John possibly married Ann Robert in April 1828 and she died in 1842. They had at least one son John in 1834.
Richard would be grateful for assistance in finding more about Samuel and Ann Rossiter. He has fairly complete information about the family after 1834. Descendants of Samuel and Ann were cordwainers (bootmakers) even quite far afield as South Africa.

Marion Lowe is searching for Binding families in Somerset and surrounding counties, together with their family connections listed here:
CHANDLER (Lympsham and Weston Super Mare SOM 1800-1900); DAY (Charles, b c1840 Worle SOM); HAM(Richard, born c1822, Weston Super Mare SOM area); HEMBRY/HEMBURY (Meare SOM 1800-1900); KINGTON (Judith, born c1770, Lympsham SOM area); PIKE (East Brent SOM 1800-1850, Locking SOM 1850-1900); RESDEN/RISDON (Hutton SOM 1800-1900); TILLEY (James born c 1809, Wedmore SOM Area).

Biles family - Maggi Shaw would appreciate help on more of the Biles family history from 1800 to the present.
George Biles and Jane (or June) were at Milborn St Andrews DOR and they had children - Charles, Alfred, Henry, Eli, Jesse and Dorcas.
Subsequently, there were grandchildren: Louisa born c1886 at Milborne DOR; Samuel born 1859 and Sarah born 1862 in Sydney NSW AUS.

Carolyn Foster is searching for information on William A. Oliver who was born in Wells SOM in 1627. He married Jane Wykes whose father was Edward Wykes(b.1590 at Wells Middle Temple SOM) and mother as Jane Bourne (b.1590). Carolyn is not looking for William Oliver's descendants though William and Jane did have a son John who died in Courtland Virginia USA in 1714. Any assistance in finding more background on William A. Oliver would be appreciated.
