Glenda Brown is attempting to find details of the personal past of her GF, Herbert Charles URCH. That past is clouded by the fact that he was sent to Canada at the age of four years in July 1897, as an orphan who had been born near Bristol, most likely in the Parish of Bedminster. When he was still young, he was taken into the family of a local farmer Robert Sparrow.
He believed his birthday was 16 Jun 1892 until he sought proof of birth for employment in 1949. Although not a "Barnado Child", the records of the Marchmont Home in Belleville ONT CAN were taken over by Barnado's in Britain, from whom he had discovered that his actual birthday was 18 Feb 1892 but this documentation has gone missing.
A cousin of Glenda obtained some details later which confirmed that their GF was indeed Herbert Charles URCH of Bedminster and that his mother was Marie URCH, a seamstress. Glenda would welcome any advice which can be offered about the origin of Herbert's mother. It is possible that she was born in the area encompassing the Somerset parishes of Mark, Westbury, Wedmore and Banwell as there were many Urch families living around there.

Ken Willmott is searching for information on the WILLMOTT and WITHEY families of Weston-in-Gordano and Nailsea SOM in the period from about 1775 to 1834.
William WITHEY married Rebecca and they had their first child William born 1776 in Chew Magna SOM, followed by Thomas (1778), George (1781), James (1783), John (1786), Job (1788) and Elizabeth who was born in 1790 at Nailsea SOM.
William WILLMOTT (b.c1791) married Elizabeth WITHEY (b.c1790) and their children were born in Weston-in-Gordano SOM; William (1815), Emma (1819), Elizabeth (1823), Margaret (1824), Ann (1826), Eliza (1828) and John (1834).
Ken is limited in his ability to move around and would be delighted to be contacted about the ancestors and descendants of these WILLMOTT and WITHEY families in Somerset ENG.

Manuel Pombo is trying to resolve what happened to William HICKMAN whose wife Ann went to Spain at the request of William's aunt Mary who had married Jose Perez de la Fuente in Bilbao, Spain. Ann took four children with her, Mary, Elizabeth, Helen-Sarah and Edward (see table listing above). As Manuel notes, William then vanished into thin air and it is not clear what happened to the other six children, five sons and one daughter. It is said that William emigrated to the USA but there is no trace if he did. Manuel is descended from Edward, the youngest of the four children who went to Spain where they all married. He has plenty of information about those four families.
Manuel would welcome any help that can be offered about what happened to William and the other six members of the family born in Taunton SOM.

Adrian Parry has further information on the known children from the 1881 Bristol Census and would welcome more information on the MUDON family ancestry and descendants. Here is an interesting extract (shortened) which appeared in the Bristol Evening World & Evening Times Echo of 3 Feb 1942 when Singapore was under siege: Headed Somerset elm became New York's dock gates, it tells about James MUDON and his twin brother John who were so exactly alike in their younger days that it was practically impossible to tell "tother from which". The twins' father as a young man had assisted his father to fell a gigantic elm, growing in Low Bliman's near Makrels Bridge, Chew Stoke. The elm was so big when chopped round there was not a saw long enough to cut through it. Two saws were welded together, quite an accomplishment in those days without acetylene welding equipment. Elms in that district were very gritty and resistant to salt water. A specially strengthened timber carriage with six broad wheels was prepared and loaded, with a team of 14 horses hauling it to Bristol. It was shipped to New York where it was used to form the sill of some lock gates.

Weldon Smith is seeking assistance on each of the families listed in the table and in details below:
SYMONDS, Whitestaunton SOM, pre-1810: Searching for parents and siblings of Mary Ann and her earlier ancestry.
FOLLETT, Combe St Nicholas SOM, pre-1810: Susannah does not appear to have been born here. Searching for her origins, perhaps around South Petherton SOM where there were Folletts in the 1700s.
ILETT/ROOK, Curry Mallet and Kingstone SOM, pre-1770: Searching for the origins of George and Honour. One or both might have come from Whitelackington, Ilminster or Isle Abbots SOM.
BAWLER, Curry Mallet SOM, pre 1770: Seem to have been two John & Mary BAWLER families having children in Curry Mallet in the 1770s. Weldon is hoping to find out which family had Martha and what their origin was.

Robert Woodland has a problem establishing which of two men was his 2xGGF James WOODLAND. The most likely James was born to James Woodland and Sarah nee Kibbey, baptised Kingstone SOM on 25 Dec 1797. However, there was a James Woodland, son of Joseph and Jane Woodland, baptised at Stocklynch Ottersey SOM on 26 Oct 1794. There is no indication of either one marrying in those parishes. James Woodland, Robert's 2xGGF, was born c1800, emigrated to Newfoundland as a fisherman and settled in Greenspond NFLD, marrying Rebecca Feltham there in 1823. Any help would be much appreciated.
Edward ROWE, b.c1715 in Yeovil SOM, married Christina (no surname) c1740 and they had two sons, Edward (c1744) and James (c1745) both born in Yeovil. Edward snr emigrated to Trinity NFLD between 1745 and 1750, was a Justice of the Peace at Trinity 1750 and died there 1754.
Any assistance on these two families would be of considerable help in tracking back on ancestry.

Michael Harding is trying to establish whether John Harding and Betty nee Murray who married at Cannington SOM in 1808 were the parents of two people who were mentioned in John's Will. The first is Elizabeth Harding (spinster) who died in 1882. The second is George HARDING of Pannoller House in the Parish of Charlinch SOM who married Emma NOTLEY in 1842 at Stogumber SOM. Emma Notley was the daughter of James Thomas Benedictus NOTLEY of Combe Sydneham Hall SOM.
Other details from the Will gives the residence of John Harding as south side of Fryern Street, Bridgwater SOM, with dwellinghouse, offices, hothouse and stables. It has been suggested that the family was connected with brewing.
Michael would welcome contact with anyone who can give him any further detail of these families and other family history. He searching for links in the families of Harding, Murray, Notley and Marwood. He has quite a lot of the family tree and the history after 1842 but there are still many gaps.
Information added 3 Feb 2000.
The 1881 Census lists Thomas Murray HARDING (Solicitor), a son of George and Emma Harding, as a prisoner at Exeter Prison DEV. He had married Julia Valentine nee Wilde on 3 Nov 1875 at St Paul's Church Clifton, Bristol. Her father was William Wilde (Solicitor). What had TMH done to be in prison and was he "exported" somewhere?

(1, b.Axbridge SOM) lived in a cottage at Compton Bishop. It appears that the little one became Fredrick Jesse William Henry Lewis sometime later in his life. This makes it clear that the other siblings (Maude, "B.S." and Harriet) were born after 1881. The kind researcher sent more: Alfred, the father was born c.5 May 1850 at Shipham, ninth child of Henry Lewis (b.c1805, Shipham) and Phoebe nee Stock (b.c1806) who were married 10 Feb 1825 at Shipham.
