Birth place and parents not known; may have emigrated to Newfoundland first but he and four sons departed for Block Island, Rhode Island in about April 1661 with 15 or 16 other settlers. Three sons, John, Tristram Jr. and William were the progenitors of a large family group on Block Island. The fourth son, Israel, appears to have been a settler in New London, Connecticut, about 1694.
