Family Queries

Veronica Ellis is searching for clues about the Membery family and its connections. James MEMBERY may have been born in Halberton DEV, bp.13 Aug 1797, to parents James MEMBERY and Ann EYRE. There were six other children but this family connection has not been definitely established.
James MEMBERY became a mason and married Martha BARNES at St Nicholas Church in Bristol, 23 Feb 1823. James appears to have been living in Upper Stanton, Stanton Drew SOM where he died on 3 March 1845, aged 48. His wife Martha was listed as a school mistress in the 1851 census and they had seven children: Emma (bp.17 Oct 1824), Mary (bp.28 May 1825, Veronica's GGM), Thomas (bp.27 Feb 1828), James and George Henry (bp. 11 Jan 1846, late age christening) - these five were christened at Stanton Drew SOM; William (bp.10 Oct 1830), Ann (bp.Jul 1834), the latter two at Pensford Public Wesleyan Chapel. It appears that the Memberys had taken up the Wesleyan faith.
Veronica would be grateful for any assistance given in establishing the background of James Membery, his parents and ancestors, possibly in Devon. Any contact with connections of the Membery children born in SOM would be of great help, too.

Kim Kendall is looking for the parents of Elizabeth CAIN (b.6 Mar 1802 SOM? d.6 Oct 1878 Illinois USA. She married her husband James BURNELL (d. England) before 1827 in Somerset. Their children were:
Mary Burnell (b.16 Apr 1827 SOM; d. 16 Apr 1906 Illinois USA) married John WATTS (family unknown) who died before 1874 at Bristol UK. All of their children migrated to Illinois and Missouri USA except for daughter Elizabeth who married a HERBERT and remained in Bristol.
The others in the BURNELL/CAIN family were:
Edwin Burnell (b.24 May 1836 at Exton SOM) : Anne (Annie) Burnell (b.1841; m. ...HOOPER - family all in USA. : George Burnel0l : Robert Burnell (b., m., and d. in England); his wife remarried James QUARTERLY who died in 1911.

Wayne P. Marriott is looking for the ancestors of Lucy PEACH and John BRAKE who were married c1846 in DOR. They had four children: Henry Peach Brake (b.1847), Harriott Georgina Brake (b.1850), Robert Brake (b.1852) and Mary Charlotte Brake (b.12 Oct 1857-1859). The Brake family emigrated to New Zealand on the ship Clontarf in 1858. Mary Charlotte made the journey as far as the shores of NZ but was scalded to death when the ship was in Lyttleton Harbour NZ. She was buried in Lyttleton Cemetery.
Wayne has no information about Lucy's first husband Slade and would welcome help on finding more about the Peach, Brake and Slade ancestry in Dorset.

Jo Knee is having difficulty establishing her ancestry in Somersetshire and would welcome any assistance.
Job GRIFFIN was her 3xGGF, born in SOM, and his first wife was Elizabeth, possibly nee STEPHENS. They emigrated to the USA in the mid 1830s with a son Elijah, born 1 Feb 1828 in England, possibly in SOM. Elizabeth died in North Bloomfield Ohio on 23 Jun 1846, aged 47 years.
It seems probable that the Griffins were accompanied by Job's brothers who may have had names Edward, Jesse and Matthew (or George).
[Webmaster note: It is possible that the recorded name in Somerset may be spelt "GRIFFEN" as there were people of such surname mentioned in the 1832 Somerset Electoral Register for the Parish of Pilton and of East Compton.]

Eric O'Neil is researching his wife's ancestors and would appreciate contact with others interested in the names TOOP and JUSTINGS and connecting descendants.
The children of John TOOP (c.1700-1783) and Ruth nee JUSTINGS are as follows:
John (bp.25 Feb 1721, Folke DOR).
The next seven were baptised in Beer Hackett DOR - George (bp.1723); William (bp.1726-d.1738); Robert (bp.1726-d.1732); Thomas (bp.1730); Elizabeth (bp.1732); Robert (bp.1736); Mary (bp.1739);
William (bp.1742 in Thornham); Ruth (no information).
The second Robert (bp.1736) married Ann DIPSDALE on 4 Jan 1772 in Over Compton DOR. They had four children born in Trent SOM and they are the direct ancestors of Eric's wife.
Full details of the family tree held by Eric and any exchanges of information can be arranged with Eric through his email address.
