Family Queries

Christopher Thorne is seeking information about the THORNE family who were settled in Sherborne from at least the 1720s until the 1830/40 period.
Benjamin THORNE was born c1756 and married Mary MILLS who possibly died c1790.They had children among whom was the second son , John Mills THORNE. Benjamin could have been a freeholder in the Sherborne area as listed in the 1807 Dorset Poll Book.
The Thorne family appears to have had considerable community interests. Chirtopher located a deed which relates to a Tenement called Hellyars. Another deed of 1835 which relates the Boot (possibly an Inn) in Newlands. Apart from the Thorne family, the Sherborne Almshouses were involved as were other families named Helliar, Score, Ensor, Cato, Swaisland, Benthall, and Hoddinot. There were also deeds to a farm in the village of Hermitage.
There was an Apprenticeship Indenture for James Higgans to Thomas Thorne, Upholsterer of Sherborne, dated 20 July 1738. There is also a receipt from John Thorne, Churchwarden of Sherborne, for indenture of Thomas Hidstone bound to Mr Brooks of Poole DOR. [Editor's note: The Parish Vestry comprised the Vicar and the Churchwardens of whom some were appointed as Overseers of the Poor (responsible for indenture of apprentices and places such as Almshouses.) and Waywardens to survey and upkeep roads. These Officials were important Parish officials.] Christopher also located records, placing John MILLS (possibly a relation of Mary Mills) as Subwarden of the Sherborne Almshouses between 1829 and 1839.
According to family history, Benjamin Thorne and John Mills ran a grocery store which expanded into the Sherborne Bank. They issued Promissory Notes, for which a One Pound engraving was held later by Dr Martin Thorne. He distributed 100 copies from the engraving to his extended family members in about 1980.
Christopher is very keen to know more about the places when and where the families lived, where the bank operated and so on. An image of the Promissory Note is below . It is a "Gold Note", not a Bank Note though it looks like the old Bank of England "fiver"!

Eleanor Swinburn is seeking information on families who lived in and around Bath SOM of whom ESKETT descendants were Ernest John ESKETT married to Rose ALLEN on 3 Apr 1904. They had four children born in Bath SOM: Edith Louise (b.17 Apr 1905), Mildred Florence (b.18 Sep 1906 and mother of Eleanor), Evelyn Violet (b.1908) and Leslie Arthur (b.1909).
Ernest J. Eskett (GF of Eleanor) emigrated to Western Australia alone. He bought 165 acres of virgin land at Denmark WA AUS in 1911 and erected a house. In 1913, he brought out his wife and four children to WA and another child, Dorothy, was born in WA.
Eleanor has been trying to find more about one of her GM Rose's sisters who came to WA with her husband at the same time as Rose and her family. This sister gave birth to a daughter named Laura, after arriving in WA but she died in childbirth. The father (possible surname Hardy) took Laura to the eastern states of Australia and she was returned to Somerset with a lady carer. Eleanor would be most appreciative of any assistance which can be given to find more about Laura, her father and about the family descendants who may still be living in the Bath SOM area.

John W. Cornick is looking for ancestral information on two families who started out in DOR and went to Newfoundland, Canada.
John CORNICK of Allington DOR married there to Anne BALSTON in 1759 and both went to Newfoundland. John Cornick has visited DOR but has reached a dead end on John of Allington DOR.
Robert SHUTE went to Newfoundland, probably from DOR but could have been from DEV. The main data comes from his marriage to Julia NOSEWORTHY at Harbour Grace in Newfoundland in 1828. The marriage certificate atates that Julia came from Bryant's Cove in Newfoundland. Robert's surname on the certificate is spelt as SHUTT but all their children's baptisms showed the surname as SHUTE. John can find now record of the death of Robert SHUTE though it appears that Julia SHUTE remarried to Richard MARSHALL on 10 Nov 1846. Oral history on Robert Shute says that he came from "the old country".
The ancestral search for both families is continuing but John would welcome any suggestions, advice and data.

Shelly Gaudie is seeking information on her VINE ancestors and would appreciate assistance.
Thomas VINE (Shelly's GGF) and his wife Emily Baston VINE nee BACKHOLLER had 13 children of whom 9 are known and 4 are not known.
The known ones were as follows:
Albert VINE b.c1887 in Ryme Intrinseca DOR (born Backholler - stepson to Thomas)
Augustus VINE b.Mar 1897 in East Chelborough DOR
Reginald Thomas VINE b.Dec 1889 in Ryme DOR

Sandra Reedy is seeking information about the Summerhayes family of Misterton SOM.
Robert M. Summerhayes was born around 1804-1810 in Stockland which was then in Dorset but became part of Devon in 1836. He married Harriet Gear in Misterton SOM in 1828. All their children were born in Misterton SOM as follows:
Harriet b.1830; Robert b.1831 and later married Adelaide (no maiden name); William b.1832; Emily b.1836; Jane b.1837;
Sarah Sophia b.1838, m.1859 Chard SOM to George Dolling; Mary Ann b.1840 d.bef 1848;
Charles Edwin b.1843, m. bef 1865 Fanny Symes at place unknown; Walter John b.1846, m. 1870 Harriet Simmonds in Bristol;
Appear to be two births in 1847 of Albert and Thomas but details are obscure; Mary Ann b.1849.
While Sandra has information to be shared about the descendants of Robert M. Summerhayes, she would welcome help in finding more about Robert and his ancestors in the Stockland area. There is some evidence that there were at least two Summerhayes families who could have given birth to a son Robert in the Stockland Parish in 1804-1806.

Janine Bell is seeking information on Elizabeth CROSS whose father was said to be Martin CROSS, son of William Cross and Mary Bacon. He was baptised at Wincanton SOM on 1 Feb 1782. She appears to have had a difficult life and was residing at Rimpton SOM when arrested. With a previous conviction, she was sentenced to transportation for 7 years.
As a convict, she applied for consent to marriage to John WHITBOURNE (free settler)and this was granted. There were married in Hobart TAS AUS on 21 Feb 1844. They had two children born in Hobart and they then moved to Victoria in about 1847 and a further ten children were born to them. John Dunn WHITBOURNE died on 11 Jan 1873. Elizabeth remarried to John McSween in 1875 and she died in Collingwood VIC in 1896. Janine can provide much background of Elizabeth's family life in Australia.
Martin Cross is said to have been a travelling clockmaker but SOM Census Records record him as an Agricultural Labourer and latterly with his family living in the Union Workhouse in Wincanton SOM. He had been married three times and there were 10 children recorded. Janine has some information about the Cross family in Wincanton. Martin was married first to Elizabeth Read (widow) by banns on 9 Mar 1825. Elizabeth died before the 1851 Census when Martin was listed as widower. Martin's address was shown as Whitehall which was the location of the Wincanton Union Workhouse. He died in 1855 in Wincanton.
Janine Bell would welcome information about Elizabeth Cross and about Martin Cross, his three wives and families. She would exchange any information she has about the Cross family and on Elizabeth Cross in particular.

Anna English would like to contact others who are researching the Sticklands in Dorset, particularly those who lived in Three Legged Cross or Verwood DOR. Her husband's maternal GGM was Beatrice Ellen STEVENS nee STICKLAND, the daughter of William Peter STICKLAND (1844-1916)and Eliza CRUTCHER (b.1845) and one of the youngest of their ten children. William Peter was living in Cranborne at the time of his marriage. In the 1881 Census, he was described as Farmer and their address was Travellers Rest Inn, Cranborne DOR which he inherited from his Uncle Thomas Lukes.
Anna has other information (which she would be pleased to share) about William Peter Stickland and Eliza in DOR and later in the Newcastle-on-Tyne area.

Tricia Miller is keen on expanding her knowledge of the family of Jacob and Lucy Wilkins, their ancestors and descendants. Their eight children were:
William (1818-1882) married Roshannah BROWN (b.1818) in Monmouth MON
Mary Anne (b.1820) but no other information to date.
Henry (b.1826, d.1918 Western Australia (Tricia's 3xGGF)
Elizabeth (b.1826) married John SPITTER
Jane (b.1829) married James SMITH (b.1832 Sherborne DOR)
Eliza (1831-1836); John (1834-1843)
Thomas (b.1838) married Elizabeth (no surname, b.1836 Sherborne DOR)
Henry (Tricia's 3GxGF) and his brother William moved to Monmouth in 1852 and both married there.
Henry Wilkins left Monmouth in 1852 and arrived in Western Australia in January 1853.
Tricia would welcome making contact with living descendants to further her understanding of the Wilkins family tree.

Saundra Williams is seeking help on her Collins/Lansdown family ancestry for which she has some problems with moves across county boundaries and through emigration to the Americas.
Richard Collins and Mary Lansdown were probably married at or near Corsley WIL in the early 1820s. Their first son Richard's birth and baptism registration has yet to found definitely. The 1841 Census for Rodden near Frome SOM shows him at home, aged 20y, and that the other six daughters and one son were born "in county", i.e. SOM. They are:
Jane (31 Jul 1826), Hannah (Jul 1828), James (c1831), Phillis (8 Nov 1834), Sarah (25 Aug 1836), Elizabeth (c1837), Ruth (13 Feb 1841). Their father Richard died in 1850, shown in Apr/Jun Quarter of the Rodden death index. No burial place has been found in records. By the 1851 Census, Mary is shown as Widow of 47y age. The sons Richard and James were not living at home and their whereabouts have not been discovered. The six daughters were all at home and shown as workers in the wwool industry except the youngest Ruth who was a scholar.
Jane COLLINS married Joseph Henry STICKLEN in Frome SOM in 1848 and they had four children before they emigrated to McDonough Co. IL USA on the Isaac Bell, arriving in 8 Sep 1856.
Hannah COLLINS married John AXFORD (son of Thomas and Hannah Axford) in Rodden on 8 May 1853. Mary and her other daughters joined the Axfords in emigrating on the Osprey from Glasgow arriving in New York on 8 May 1855. It seems that the sons Richard and James remained in England and no details have been found for them as yet.
Saundra and her mother Pat have much information about the families which accrued in the USA to the already married daughters and those who married in the USA. Saundra and Pat would be delighted to find Collins and Lansdown descendants still in England and to establish more details about Richard Snr's death and the families of Richard and James Collins.

Peter Haynes is interested in the BATTEN family of Yeovil and earlier of North Petherton SOM. He can go back to the 16th and 17th centuries as Burkes Landed Gentry has an entry for Battens. He has the wills of the earliest Battens and wishes to uncover more data.
The family can be traced back to John Batten of Michael Church, North Petherton SOM, who was assessed in 1597 for a subsidy for his estate in that Parish. His son Walter Batten, husbandman of Michael Church (d.1630), succeeded him. Walter Batten's sons were Henry, yeoman of Michael Church SOM (d.1685 or 1686) and John, yeoman of Tuckerton, North Petherton SOM (d.1685). Peter would welcome any assistance which can be given to extend his background information on the Batten Family, and to earlier times if that is possible.

Mary Kiely has had some real finds from the original entry and other efforts. She would be interested to hear from anyone with links to any of the following children of Henry Trimby, born 1801 Zeals WIL, who married Elizabeth INGS, born 1802 Cucklington SOM. Eight children were born at Penselwood SOM:
Charles (b.6 May 1827), John (b.1830), Josiah (b.15 Jan 1832), Henry (b.1834), Oliver (b.25 Dec 1836), Mary (b.1839), Frances (dau., b.1842) and Caroline (b.1846).

Belle Woodward has problems gaining more background on the Lee family whose surname seems to have been listed as LEIGH in the baptisms of their first three children and LEE thereafter. She has not found what Sarah's maiden name was but in the 1851 Census she is listed as born in Old Cleeve SOM. Their children were as follows:
William LEIGH bap.6 Oct 1833, Timberscombe SOM (died before 1844); Eliza LEIGH b.c1835 Timberscombe SOM; domestic servant in Nether Stowey SOM (1851 Census); Thomas LEIGH bap.6 Feb 1837 Timberscombe SOM
James LEE b.c1841 Bishop's Nympton DEV; William LEE b.c1844 Bishop's Nympton DEV
John LEE (Belle's 3xGGF) bap Sep 1845 Timberscombe DEV; Sarah Jane LEE bap.30 Jan 1848 Timberscombe DEV
From 1851 Census records, James probably died between 1848 and 1851 and Sarah, a widow and 42 years of age, was living in Dunster SOM with her four boys - Thomas (11y, scholar), James (8y), William (6y) and John ((4y). Sarah died between 1851 and 1861; two of her sons were in Glamorgan by 1861.
Belle would be grateful for assistance in finding more about Sarah's parents (in Old Cleeve?) and her maiden name, the date and place of her marriage.

Madeline Sweasey is searching for links between DOR and HAM families with the surname JESSE and variants.
The Jesse families in the Burleston/Cheselbourne DOR are thought to be as follows:
Thomas Jesse, bp.27 Feb 1693, appears to have been the son of Thomas and Alice Jesse.
Thomas Jesse (1693) married and had a son Joseph (bp.21 Jul 1726) at Burleston DOR. Joseph (1726) married Mary nee ARNOLD at Cheselbourne DOR on 11 Jun 1753 and had Joseph (b/bp 5 Jun 1758) in Burleston DOR.
Joseph JESSE (b.1758) was apprenticed to a shipbuilder in Poole DOR and eventually moved to Fawley HAM where he married Ann LANGER in Dec 1779.
Madeline is attempting to establish better links between the HAM and DOR Jesse families and whether Joseph (1758) had siblings/cousins who had also moved from DOR to the HAM area priot to 1690 and into the mid 1700s. She would appreciate any assistance and would exchange and compare information.

Jill Alder is trying to resolve the parentage of Louisa SNOOK who remained unmarried up until at least 1871. Margaret SNOOK, her mother, was born in Ireland and is shown as 80 years old in the 1861 Census [RG9/1705,folio73 p26] formerly a Lace Maker, living in Bedminster SOM with her daughter Louisa, age 40 years. In the 1851 Census, Louisa (30y) is shown as a house servant, unmarried, at the home of Henry Salmon, Attorney and Solicitor, at Ashton Tce, Bedminster St Paul.
Jill has other background Census and possible death data in the period 1841 to 1871, including the information that in 1871 Louisa was a cook to a Schoolmaster and living at St Cuthberts Walcot, Bath SOM.
Jill would welcome help in determining whether Margaret and Louisa were directly related to Thomas Snuke (Snook) and her 2xGGF Henry Snook, or if some other explanation has to be found.

Barry Page is seeking more information about the Johnson family of Weston-in-Gordano SOM. All that is known at present is John Carl Johnson married Elizabeth Ann Williams and had three children - Marguerite Ethel, Mary Winifred and Alec.
It is believed (but needs to be substantiated) that John Carl Johnson was born c1859 in Arendal, Norway. We know that in 1881, at age 22, he worked as a mariner and boarded at Mary Ann Crouch’s house in Shady Lane, Great Driffield, Yorkshire. In early 1882, he married Elizabeth Ann WILLIAMS who was born in Weston-in-Gordano SOM.
According to the marriage certificate of his eldest child, Marguerite Ethel, his middle name has changed from Carl to Charles (Anglicised version) and his occupation is listed as Steward. It is possible that John died before 1891 though this needs to be established.
Elizabeth Ann came from a large family. Her father, Thomas Ashford WILLIAMS Snr. was born c1821 in Portishead SOM and died September 1871 in Bedminster SOM. Her siblings were: Emily (b.1843), Thomas Ashford Jr. (1844-1887), Mary (b.1847), Henry (b.1849), John (b.1851), William (b.1854), James (b.1857) and Charles (b.1860). Elizabeth Ann’s second marriage in mid-1895 to William HARMAN produced a son, Edmund, b.c1899 in Weston-in-Gordano SOM.
Since Barry is a direct descendent through Marguerite Ethel, his paternal grandmother, he would appreciate any assistance documenting the Johnson family as completely as possible for future generations.
