Cemetery excavation of 1,800 bodies to start Monday

Associated Press
Posted: 11/3/06 8:48am

A year-long excavation of an early Tucson cemetery is set to begin Monday.

As many as 1,800 people were laid to rest in the former National Cemetery.

Now a portion of the site will become a  Justice Court/Municipal Court Complex.

Before construction can begin, the county needs to excavate the site, document whatever historical remains are found and rebury the bodies.

Any Indian remains found will be returned to the appropriate tribe, while others will be buried at All Faiths Cemetery on the East Side of Tucson.

The excavation is expected to cost $1 million. The county has set aside $9 million to pay for reburials.
