A sizeable new survey has come up with some fairly predictable results regarding console failure rates.
While many of us here are well acquainted with Xbox 360's red rings, having gone through at least a couple of consoles, the latest survey on the matter still makes for shocking reading.
No Fuss Reviews says it polled 500,000 site visitors for each of the three major console platforms.
42 per cent of Xbox 360 owners said that their console had needed repairing or been replaced due to fault, compared to eight per cent of PS3 owners and one per cent of Wii owners.
The survey continued:

Sobering reading indeed and not far from the truth I'd imagine. I'm really fed up with Microsoft's build quality, from the console to the controllers, none of it is built to last more than the warranty.
There better be some major improvements next gen or they'll be losing at least one big spender.
the thing is,even though this shouldn't happen,if i do however get the YLOD that's it for me and the PS3,as they don't replace them(mine being a launch 60gig machine backwards compatible)
the 360 i have had 2 RRoDs and E74 and they have replaced them each time,each time i have got a new 360 back within the fortnight with a new up to date Manufacturing date(new machine)...so the 3 year warranty goes off that new date..i am now covered again until 2012(my current manufacturing date is 3/1/09(i actually bought the 360 on Dec 15th 2005)..so at least that's something from Microsoft's side even though i agree this should not even happen
anyway if i got the YLOD on my PS3,and SONY want me to either pay Ł150 or buy a new one i would be out..i paid Ł425 for the damn thing anyway
@mettalicorphan Microsoft have to replace all the broken ones cause they break soo much, Sony don't have to and like all other devices it has a warranty which you can get extended
when I first bought my PS3 in 07 (after saving up from my crappy part time uni job for months) it crashed and died 5 seconds into the hard disk install. Sony were really reluctant to replace it and said that Amazon wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
long story short - Amazon gave me a new replacement 3 days later while Sony were offering a refurbished one within 2 weeks.
I wonder what the failure rate of 360s bought in the last 12 months are, since the newer chip set. I'm still not convinced, and I'm just waiting for mine to RRoD (it's been 15 months or so now of pretty solid use). I certainly didn't expect MS's awful failure rates to be any better in this survey the vast majority of 360's sold predate the latest chipset/
The wii might get used less, but it is still way more solid than the 360/PS3. I think this gen has been poor in general with patches for broken games, PS3 firmware issues and of course the rrod, which dwarves pretty much everything.
The only thing that breaks with the wii is the screen of your TV and the horny switch in your brain when you fall off your wii fit.
The ps3 slim certainly sorted out the issues with the fatty. Ive had a ps3 slim since launch and its been perfect so far. Maybe the 360 slim can sort out all those issues. With gears 3 and natal on the horizon a slimmer version looks very tasty. Sliming down and losing all that unnecessary fat seems to work wonders for all works of life.
I think Microsoft has been disgraceful with the whole rrod affair, as such I'll never buy a 360, because I feel they didn't (and still haven't) done everything possible to prevent rrod, given the size of the issue it's plainly obvious the model and inards are to blame, as such the console needs a complete re-design, something that'll never happen (unless they give it the slim treatment, which would probably make the problem worse), as such I'll never buy one.
Any figures on consoles bricking because of faulty firmware updates?
At least Microsoft will learn from the hardware failures, they learnt a hell of a lot after the original Xbox... not making the machine the size of a suitcase, not charging over the odds, not having the controller so big it's practically unusable, get decent third party support... all of these were remedied second time around.
Anyone know what the outcome of the court case was? MS were taken to court for knowing they were putting out a product they knew would fail. Or did the 3 year warranty come round from that?
I'm on xbox no 3 and my wii has been in for repair twice too. The ps3 has been fine since I got it. The xbox always seems to die just after a system update.
My launch 40gb Playstation 3 is still going strong, as are all of my friends', bar one whose had to buy a new one due to him leaving it on for a few weeks. Granted I have more friends on Xbox 360, around 3 times as many, the fact is though that almost every single one of them has suffered a rrod or other fault. The worst case being somebody with nine controllers, never used because his Xbox had died that many times, he now just buys Arcades and replaces the hard drives. I've always been a fan of the sony console, and figures like this don't inspire me to switch over anytime soon.
No problems whatsoever with my Jasper chipset Xbox 360 bought in June 2009. No problems with the wireless controller I use neither (I haven't used the second wireless controller so I don't actually know if it has any problems, yet seeing as it is essentially still brand new I expect it functions).
Not surprised. Those of you worried about a repair cost for your ps3 just either get a warranty or extend your old one. Also if you're having issues call customer support, and they'll have you run 'safe mode' which might fix your problem. Then if that doesn't work send it in.
My Sega Saturn is running Guardian Heroes right now and dancing on the grave of my 360 for the fourth time.
God, i loved that game. On topic, every time i consider buying a 360, I get reminded of my two RRODs and the high number of melted consoles. Hopefully they'll fix the problem soon..and for good, but I'd rather spend the money on a pspgo to be honest.

If you bought a PS3 on launch in the UK and also bought a 360 on the same day neither would still be in warranty now as the PS3 launch day was over 3years ago. You would be in the same boat of been out side the warranty period whichever console decided to fail.
The only reason you have longer warranty cover for your 360 is because it has already failed on you, if you don't want to be in this same worrying position you find yourself in with the PS3 in 2years time with your 360 you better hope for another failure in the next 12months to snag that addition cover .
The warranty for the 360 each time it dies is basically putting icing on a turd. The main issue hasn't been fixed for 5 years so far, and the latest models have slightly improved it but not by a massive amount. So far, *touch wood* my PS3 has been almost perfect, apart from once corrupting all my profiles. Luckily I keep all the details written down so got them all back, and lost no save data at all. Always remember to leave nothing in your PS3 overnight, especially if you're on holiday. It can have an effect over a long period of time.
I bought a 360 and got the RROD not long after. This week I bought an "Achievement Unlocked: RROD" t-shirt from thinkgeek to commemorate the event and hopefully embarrass Microsoft and discourage sales of their shoddy merchandise.

I was told this by somebody else too when I had my 360. However, never had a problem doing it with the PS3 - although admittedly it's only a couple months old.
Might have to start taking the disc out at night now!
