See Killzone 2's incredible intro

There might be a spoiler or two...
Sony has released the opening cinematic from its graphically jaw-dropping shooter Killzone 2, which you can watch below.

The footage has been doing the SD rounds on YouTube for a while now, but Sony's finally released the proper version.

US Qore subscribers can look forward to getting their hands on a demo of the game on February 3, while the UK date for the tryout - which is planned for an open-to-all release here - is yet to be announced.

Thats ****ing impressive. Now were those ingame graphics or just a jazzy FMV.

Colour me impressed.

freggin excellent!!!
Posted by socheeky
Unless the PS3 is secretly a PIXAR supercomputer, those are not in-game graphics.
Posted by Dajmin
It'll be a CVG render based on game models. I don't imagine the in-game characters will have as detailed soft flesh, but I could be wrong.

Had to watch it without sound here so only got part of the experience but I'm still well impressed. Obviously that's what these things are supposed to do, but all of the reviews have been glowing so far. Really looking forward to this one.
Posted by Mogs
Some of it is in-game, some of it is clearly pre-rendered (the old guy definitely is).
Posted by _Marty_
Hugely impressive, and with more than a little Starship Troopers vibe (which is no bad thing) Certainly does a decent job of drawing you into the game - a lot better than Halo 3s intro did for starters.

as an official xbox fanboy all i can really say is..........................wow!
Posted by socheeky
And the spaceships, planet, explosions... I doubt a single frame is purely the game engine. Consoles aren't that powerful yet.

I'm not disputing it's a kick arse intro.
Posted by altitude2k
Very cool. It did remind me of the Gears 2 intro, with the leader making a big speech and human troops gathering for an invasion. In fact, if these dudes were underground instead of on another planet, the storyline would be very similar.

damn...

wow, that's all I have to say.

I'm thinking about getting a PS3 just for this game.
Posted by MrPirtniw
I'm not really sold on the actual gameplay video's but that was pretty cool. Except for the Rico and Sev characters walking like they'd shat themselves at the beginning.

Very cinematic though. I like.

In-game I think. Very impressive graphically, it's on my list of games to get when I get a PS3. Only worry is the campaign, IGN said it was a bit lacking but the multiplayer segment elevates it to the standout FPS of this gen so far.
Posted by Tonyb
GOD DAMN, that shit looks impressive!!
Posted by restall66
how do you know its pre rendered i mean it might be,but wheres your proof.
Posted by Mogs
I would like to think that this game will draw a line under the trend of b4d455 space marine games that take themselves too seriously.

I would like to think that, but sadly they'll keep coming.
Posted by _Marty_
Better than Halo 3s? While I wasn't a huge fan of the game, the multiplayer 'stuff' in Halo 3 literally blew me away. Even down to the 'recording of a match for future playback' feature.
If they've managed to top that, then fair play - that's quite an achievement.
Posted by Black Mantis
Not the multiplayer on its own, the whole package.
Posted by Mogs
Eyes and experience.
Posted by Black Mantis
You should've added 'boy' at the end of that! :)
Posted by socheeky
As a film journalist, I have seen just about every full CG animated movie and no in-game footage has come even close to the level of detail in any of those films. Do you really think they've developed an engine comparable to images that can take days, weeks, or months to render - and in real time?!

Perhaps CVG could prove me wrong by showing side by side frames of the intro and the campaign. I have no 'proof', just a decent idea of what is possible in a console game
Posted by DS1086
IGN did NOT say the single-player campaign was lacking. What they did say is "The single-player experience is a truly enjoyable campaign across the Helghast home world that will test your skills, particularly on the higher difficulty levels."
Posted by _Marty_
LOL - that is, indeed, pretty different to 'lacking' :)

Eyes and experience BOY

Not the US review, the Australian one. I should've stated that.
Posted by nologo
anyone in the beta know if keyboard/mouse is an option for this game?
otherwise my ps3 is yet again demoted to my dvd player that plays my downloaded xvid movies upscaled lol..
i just cant stand playing control pad FPS games..its like poking your self in the eye really slowly...i gave Cod4 a try..yeah it was good..but control pads are just no good for me.

Welcome to last week CVG.

Okay, I've not seen the AU review :o

What's up - thumbs seized up due to too much level grinded and gold farming?
Posted by Mogs
Indeed. Only the Wii comes close to rivalling m/kb for FPS games, which is one reason why I'm looking forward to The Conduit. A great man once said that playing FPS with a joypad is like wanking with a boxing glove.
Posted by Black Mantis
They did state it's been doing the rounds in the article, give them a break. I haven't seen until now, so I'm glad they posted it.
Posted by crimbo
yes it does come with a mouse and keyboard option
Posted by _Marty_
Don't knock it til you've tried it ;)
And while the Wii has the potential to get FPS controls utterly spot on (Metroid Prime) it can also royally stuff them up too (Red Steel). M+KB is ALWAYS superior, at least in my experience.

Sorry this is really bugging me, I know people have already commented but....

Is this intro realtime of fmv?

It sort of looks realtime but can't be sure. They have made it in such a way that you could be mistaken into thinking it was realtime, like that bloody E3 footage.
Posted by nologo
once thats confirmed, i'll part with cash for it.
and tbh..if it does..and this game is huge it will change FPS games from now.
joypad players will be owned so badly.

and yes..my thumbs are built for wow farming lol.
grinding 5k gold for my epic flying mount for my Deathknight is hard work.

Just read on Edge that Sony are stumping up £2M on advertising for the UK alone.

They must be pretty confident of this game if thats the case.

Its about time they pulled their fingers out and did decent advertising.

Makes you wonder what they were thinking pre christmas though!!
Posted by pishers
looks like fmv to me as the game engine can still be used to render it. look at the likes of mass effect when you enter conversation mode, the graphical quality goes up a fair whack as you dont get to control character movement and interaction. i would say this is what the game would look like if you weren't playing it as it has to deal with all the other processes as well where as the intro is entirely scripted.
Posted by altitude2k
Stick to spreadsheets if you like the mouse and keyboard so much. I'll take a controller designed for games any day.
Posted by nologo

i'll see you in a deathmatch then my friend..you will look totally stupid and regret ever saying that.
you might preference control pad..but keyboard/mouse combo gives 100% more advantage in speed and accuracy.
yeah some ppl have mastered the control pad for fps games..but they still won't stand a chance against someone who is slightly skilled using a keyboard/mouse setup

You say that, but the Shadowrun devs said that they had to tweak the game because (even to their surprise) in the testing the console players were out-performing the PC players during cross-platform games.

'tis true.

I read nothing at all into that.

Indeed.

»I read nothing at all into that.

Well that's pretty obvious. That's like saying "people using aimbots in Counter-Strike are more likely to get headshots". But in those tests autoaim wasn't on. Hence their surprise.

In fact, if you read that comment, it's not saying what was happening in Shadowrun, it's a general statement saying that it would effect the balance. Which of course it would.

none of the footage is in game its all prerendered cant you remember footage from e3 a couple of years ago all you Sony fan boys bought that hook line and sinker the ps3 still cant match the 360 for graphics yet
Posted by voodoo341
It's been a long time then since I looked forward to playing a prerendered game.

If you take a little look at the Guerilla site they explain to you how it's all done using the in game engine. It's in full HD there as well with a comparison to the prerendered footage. It's been there for two weeks now.

Even Xbox owners should want to see this game do well. It will make Microsoft raise their game. In the same way all PS3 owners should be saying thanks to Halo and Bungie for raising the standard of FPS's in the first place.

double post, ignore! :D
Posted by MrXBob
You know, there were moments when I was a little baffled by how well the PS3 was selling. Now, reading this thread, I realise the explanation is quite simple.

There are a hell of a lot of uninformed, unintelligent and downright gullable gamers out there. If you think that even a millisecond of that video is rendered with any kind of real-time engine, then there's no wonder you were duped into buying the system.

It is very nice CGI (although nowhere near Blizzard standard), but I assure you, with a 100% guarantee, that you are not looking at real time graphics. To get that kind of quality takes at least an hours rendering time even at Pixar - and thats just for 1 minute of footage. How on earth do you think any home console could do that in real time?? Please! Give me a break.
Posted by RandyChimp
Don't be fooled. This is obviously not ingame footage, but it is damn close. They've done a spectacular job with this game, which should put all other developers to shame. If this is what PS3 is capable of, why the hell is no-one else aiming for this?!
Posted by MrXBob
.. Well, you just said yourself 'this is obviously not ingame footage' - so the reason nobody is aiming for this is because it's not what the PS3 is capable of.
Posted by Adropacrich2
Stupid buggers that's not in game.Gears did a similar trick at the start of the Derrick sections and then cut to in game
