GTA IV tie ratios "highest ever"

Attach rates beat previous installments, says Take-Two.
The software tie ratio for Grand Theft Auto IV is the "highest it has ever been" for the franchise, Take-Two chair Strauss Zelnick said during the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference.

Citing U.S. NPD sales data through early October 2008, he said the GTA IV software tie ratio for PS3 was 32 percent, and Xbox 360's (which has a larger installed base in the U.S.) was 28 percent.

"Our tie ratio for Grand Theft Auto IV illustrates the strength of the franchise," said Zelnick.

Tie ratios depict the the amount of software units sold compared to the installed base of a console.

GTA IV is currently the highest-rated game of the year, earning an average review score of 98 on Metacritic. The game launched in the U.S. in April.

In its first week of release, GTA IV generated over $500 million in revenue with 6 million units sold worldwide.

Take-Two recently announced a February 17 release date for the long-awaited Xbox 360 GTA IV downloadable content, dubbed "The Lost and Damned."

I wonder how many of those thousands of gamers that bought it consider that average 98% mark was accurate.

And I wonder how many of them still have it too...

Vice City is still my favourite GTA game by a country mile.

Hardly shocking when you look at the massive marketing campaign it had. And of course a certain crazy ex-lawyer going nuts about it.

I still think it's a great game though. The city is well-realised and it feels pretty close to a living, breathing metropolis. Not worth the stupidly high marks it got, but a mid-90s isn't far off.

I like Vice City too, but I felt it got really annoying later in the story. Some of the missions require pixel-perfect timing down specific routes, which sort of negates the free world feel.

It's still a great game - Liberty City was put together perfectly, it had that great sense of humour that we've come to expect and a great story. The review scores it recieved really aren't that big a deal - it got what the reviewers felt it deserved at the time...it's only a number, at the end of the day.

Vice City is still my favourite though - I loved some of the later missions...half of the fun was working out the best way to do it. Does anyone remember the assasination job you have over at the airport? - I had trouble getting away from the FBI agents that pile onto you as soon as you make a break for it. In the end, I used my helicopter - parked in the Airport car-park, did the job and flew away completely untouched.

Brilliant stuff.

In the Game store where I work part time we have over 100 copies preowned on 360 and about 60 on PS3.

Just a shame that we wont see cooperaton between traders and retailers that allows us to see retainment figures...

What do retainment figures matter when you've sold as many copies as Rockstar have? It's not as if pre-owned can affect the DLC sales.

In hindsight, the 98% average was a bit over the top and born out of the massive wave of hype (which the game journos contributed too equally as much as rockstar themselves did).

But I'd still score it pretty high personally, no less than 89%, no higher than 94%. No game is absolutely perfect, but GTA IV is brilliant - I don't care what anyone says.

Like many, I was lured in by the hype and the stupidly OTT review scores.
Looking back now, the games an 8.5/10 at best. If it wasn't for the upcoming 360 DLC, I would have traded my copy in along time ago...

28% and 32% are pretty good tie in rates though.

Must be over 10m copies right on both formats?

Id say its better than San An for story, but its hard to compare to previous GTA's, as its a completely different take on the Series.

I loved Vice city, purely for the 80's and the soundtrack, it was like playing Miami Vice stories without a crap tie in.

San An was a massive game, but there were pretty boring sections too.

94% for me though for all round presentation and game play. Still the best game ive played this year though as a single player.

GTA's who can hate them...

who can remember spending hours playing on the PC GTA's top down view??? I certainly can and when GTA 3 came out, there was nothing on earth that even touched it, I was gobsmacked at the 3d goodliness. The fog, the lighting, the awesomeness of the pleasure of hours of hitting someone with a baseball bat, i loved it and so the love of GTA began.....yes Vice city was awesome with its motorbikes and soundtrack. That was cool, I bought the whole disk set, it is wicked...then San Andreas, another great addition to the series, then 4...what can you say... I agree with earlier comments in hindsight its not worth the marks it got, but its def up there, the comedy, the ricky gervis sketches, the little touches you take for granted. I most admit I got bored of it after a couple of months....its all the dating and pleasing everyone, it did my head in, but I finally finished it last week when I just ploughed through the missions. It was great to go through it all again. it is truely a great game, cant wait for the DLC....Bring on Feb 2009!!!
