Linux
My major computing interest, certainly for the last few years. I don't hate Windows, and I love my Mac, but Linux has become my main OS.
if you're curious,
try Ubuntu -- this is a new screenshot of the latest release.
Some Open Office presentations I did for my local linux user group:
If you're interested
in linux I strongly suggest you take a look at the local user group in
your area; there's usually one within travelling distance of most areas
of the UK. The whole experience is a lot more fun and less painful that
way. If you live in Surrey come and join our club! The SLUG
meets the third Wednesday of the month in Guildford, and also the second Saturday of the month.
How to get started with linux
- Join your local linux user group! This is the best way to start with
the Penguin, and the best way of guaranteeing you'll still be using
it in a year's time.
- Pick a distribution. There was a same when I'd say "find one that suits you",
but Ubuntu is so good now
there's not a lot of point using anything else. OK, that's an exaggeration, but it's not far wide
of the mark. You could also
use Fedora. Stay away from things like debian and Gentoo unless
you've had a bit of experience.
- Once you've got your system going and you want to find out a bit
more, start reading Linux Weekly News, which is a great
site, and well worth the subscription fee.
- Lastly, find some way of contributing! Pick an area that doesn't
work well and fix it. Even if you're not a programmer you can still
file bug reports or add documentation.
