The security services market is
booming. Security services expenditures in the U.S. alone will
grow from $3.7 billion in 2000 to $9.3 billion in 2005, according
to Gartner Group projections. Such revenue projections are a
hard lure to resist. Many security "specialists" have
set up shop in recent years, and most large professional services
firms have added security to their menu of services.
"Venture capital firms are just throwing money at security
companies," reports Gartners John Pescatore. Anybody
who can gather 10 or so bodies with security résumés,
VCs are still funding them."
Unfortunately, few of these companiesincluding the big-name
firmspossess the experience, in-depth knowledge, and special
insight required to adequately protect their clients resources.
This dramatically complicates the job of selecting a security
consultant. Before you place your organizations vital
resources in a security consultants hands, make sure it
meets the following criteria: |
|
|
Has earned a reputation
for delivering high-quality security services and
products to well-satisfied commercial and government
clients
|
|
Can address information
systems, infrastructure, and physical security;
and can address information systems security at
the network, platform, application, operations,
and B2B/B2C levels
|
|
Understands the
technologies your organization employs
|
|
Will tailor its
work based upon your organizations logical
and physical infrastructures, line of business,
willingness to incur risk, and other unique requirements
|
|
Delivers focused,
implementable recommendations and designs
|
|
Makes
product recommendations without undue influence
from VAR relationships
|
|
Will
help you strike a balance between maintaining a
secure environment and achieving your functional
objectives
|
|
