Thomas taunts, haunts Bills as Dolphins win fourth straight

NEXT GAME
Mon., Oct. 23 @NY Jets 9:00 PM ET

Holding out hope
 Zach Thomas
Thomas might miss the Jets' game.
Linebacker Zach Thomas, who sprained his ankle Sept. 24 against New England and missed the Cincinnati game, says he might miss the team's next game against the Jets on Oct. 23 after reinjuring his ankle in Sunday's victory over the Bills. The Dolphins have a bye this weekend and are off until Monday. Thomas canceled plans to fly home to Texas and will stay in Miami to have his ankle treated. "I'm going to spend all that time here getting treatment and watching tape," said Thomas. "I'm going to study them, and if I don't play, I'll save the notes for the next time."

    Dolphins must remain vigilant
     Dave Wannstedt
Wannstedt knows this team started 5-1 last year, too.
It's all well and good, the Dolphins' 5-1 start under head coach Dave Wannstedt. But if history is any indication, a storm approaches. In the four years Jimmy Johnson coached the team, it went 30-18 through November, and 8-13 from Dec. 1 through the end of the season. The late-season fades included playoff losses the past three years by a combined score of 117-13. So how can Wannstedt avoid this pitfall? He hopes to do so by keeping his team fresh. "I've thought that thing through extensively," he said. "We're going to adjust some things as we get down the stretch."

    NEWS AND NOTES
  • DT Jermaine Haley excelled in his first start for the Dolphins. Head coach Dave Wannstedt wanted a bigger lineup at tackle to stop the Bills' running attack. Haley even recorded a safety, but he drew the wrath of Bills guard Ruben Brown, who called Haley a punk and vowed to get him in their rematch at Buffalo on Dec. 3. Wannstedt told Haley in a team meeting on Monday to be ready for the rematch or hope that Daryl Gardener is back to be the starting tackle, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported.
  • LB Michael Hamilton, released by the Chargers in August, was signed on Wednesday. Hamilton, 26, was the Chargers' third-round draft choice in 1997 and played in 33 games for them, starting twice.
