Andre Schürrle moves to Chelsea, Leverkusen pull in Son

German international Andre Schürrle's transfer to Chelsea, long the subject of speculation, has been completed. The international winger cost London club and star manager Jose Mourinho a reported 23 million euros.

Four-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi and his father have said they are "surprised" at allegations of tax fraud submitted by public prosecutors in Catalonia. Messi is said to owe millions in back taxes.

Anywhere but Bayern for Lewandowski, Gomez may leave Munich

Borussia Dortmund will not allow striker Robert Lewandowski to move to Bayern Munich this summer, though he may go elsewhere. Bayern have said that this did not impact on the potential sale of Mario Gomez. 

Ribery, Van Buyten to stay on at Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has signed a contract extension and will stay with the treble winners until 2017. Defender Daniel Van Buyten has also added a year to his current deal, which was set to end this summer.

Treble-winners Bayern Munich will play a fundraiser in the Bavarian city of Passau to help victims of the heavy flooding in Bavaria and other parts of Germany. The club said it "wanted to give something back."

Former German national team captain Michael Ballack has capped his career with a sold-out testimonial match in Leipzig. Proceeds from the event will be going to benefit the victims of the recent flooding in Europe.

Outgoing Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has quashed speculation that he may return to Madrid, but he left the door open for future engagements. It comes after Bayern won its first ever treble with him as coach.

Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he will rejoin London club Chelsea as manager, after months of self-propelled speculation. This could open the door in Madrid for outgoing Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes.

The US Soccer Federation has celebrated its 100-year anniversary by taking a big, German international scalp. Germany lost 4-3 in a match that was full-to-bursting with records, both good and bad.

Hoffenheim have retained their place in the Bundesliga top flight with a 2-1 win in their playoff at Kaiserslautern. Despite a lot of heart, the home side simply didn't have the ideas to overhaul a first-leg deficit.

Second tier Duisburg face relegation after league license denied

German football club MSV Duisburg have not been granted a license to play second tier football next season. The club face relegation to the third division after not meeting a deadline for financial requirements.

In less than one year, hosts Brazil will be playing as yet unknown opponents on the opening day of the 2014 World Cup. The most successful World Cup team on the planet, Brazil, has not hosted the tournament since 1950. 

Nadal beats Ferrer to clinch French Open

Spaniard Rafael Nadal has won the French Open in a three set match against his compatriot David Ferrer. The win adds to Nadal’s already impressive record at Roland Garros and puts the 27-year-old into the record books.  

Red Bull's Vettel wins first Canadian Grand Prix

Germany’s Sebastian Vettel has notched up his first ever win on North American tarmac, in the Canadian Grand Prix. He was hotly pursued by Lewis Hamilton, who was ultimately pipped for second place by Fernando Alonso. 

Serena Williams takes French Open tennis title

Women's tennis star and world number one, Serena Williams has won her first French Open championship since 2002. The victory is her 16th Grand Slam singles title, making her the tournament's oldest women's champion. 

Rosberg wins crash-delayed Monaco Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg has won the Monaco Grand Prix in a race that had to be suspended and restarted after a crash about halfway through. Sebastian Vettel remains top of the drivers' standings. 

Santos confirm the sale of Neymar, Brazil's great hope

Brazilian football giants Santos FC have confirmed that their superstar striker Neymar Jr. will be leaving the club. Neymar can pick his next club after Santos accepted two offers, both of which came from Spain. 

Wolfsburg seal treble with Women's Champions League Final win

Wolfsburg have captured a historic treble after winning the Women's Champions League final, ending Lyon's two-year reign as the trophy holders. A penalty from Martina Müller proved to be the decider.

    Wiese's star plummets

    Former German national goalkeeper Tim Wiese left Werder Bremen for nouveau riche Hoffenheim this summer with the express aim of qualifying for international competition. Poor performances and late-night drunken escapades meant that the only place he went was the stands. This could have been a career-ending season.

    Compper proves a quitter

    Defender Marvin Compper made hasty exit from Hoffenheim last January after admitting his heart wasn’t in a relegation battle. While a small part of us wants to laud the German for his honesty, a much bigger part of us thinks that’s no way for a former national team player to behave. He now rides the bench for Fiorentina in Italy.

    Lukimya provides loads of laughs

    For a stretch of a few weeks this season Assani Lukimya (here being hugged byZlato Junuzovic) couldn’t stop scoring own goals or making comical passes that were essentially own goals. He also had the dubious distinction of picking up a red card as an 89th minute substitute. The defender was a major factor as Bremen went winless in their last twelve matches.

    Gebre Selassie left in opponents’ dust

    Czech defender Theodor Gebre Selassie (right) didn’t particularly impress at last summer’s European Championship so perhaps his name was the reason Werder Bremen brought him in. The irony, though, is that the fullback has little of his near namesake Haile Gebrselassie’s speed, which is one reason Bremen had the worst defense in the Bundesliga.

    Mancienne brings up the rear

    Who's the worst defender who regularly played in the Bundesliga? According to kicker magazine, it's Michael Mancienne. Hamburg's Englishman picked up only one yellow card in 21 games – a sure sign that a defender is either brilliant or usually out of position. In Mancienne's case, it was most probably the latter.

    Xhaka not the answer for Gladbach

    20-year-old Granit Xhaka from Switzerland was touted as one of Europe’s hot young prospects when he arrived in Mönchengladbach last summer, but his play was nowhere near as cool as his name. One goal and no assists is a meager return for an offensive midfielder in 22 appearances. Xhaka needs a lot more boom next campaign.

    Schäfer's standing declines

    As recently as 2010, Marcel Schäfer was playing for the German national team. Now the Wolfsburg midfielder is lucky if he can even get a late substitute appearance for one of the Bundesliga's most disappointing sides. Schäfer turns 29 this summer, and you can't help but think the Wolves wouldn't mind putting him out to pasture.

    Elia pulls disappearing act

    After bombing at Juventus, Eljero Elia (left) headed to Bremen to regroup, but the Dutch winger only had a single goal and ended the season suspended. He and teammate Marco Arnautovic had a wee-hours altercation with the Autobahn police. And if you're at a rest stop with bad boy Arnautovic at 3am, you’re not discussing tactics.

    Don't get us wrong. We love Gerald Asamoah. "Blondie" was always our favorite when he played for Germany. But some players don't know when to quit. And Asamoah, who turns 35 this year, should have quit last summer rather ending his wonderful career watching from the stands at woeful Greuther Fürth.

    Stuttgart's knickers in a Kvist

    Not so long ago Stuttgart paid 4.5 million euros for William Kvist (left), and DFB propaganda hailed him as a strategic genius. Now Stuttgart would be lucky to get a cent for the Danish midfielder, after he recorded a grand total of no goals and no assists in 25 appearances. Too defensive, says understated coach Bruno Labbadia.

    Voronin goes AWOL

    One measly point separated Fortuna Düsseldorf from possible non-relegation, and veteran striker Andrey Voronin (right) was the sort of player brought in to get those big points. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian didn't get on with his coach, started only six matches and ended up suspended, with but a lone assist to show for a wasted season.

    Fürth - a study in frustration

    Finally, we give a collective spot in our team of 2012-13 disappointment to the entire Greuther Fürth front line. You don’t need to look far to see why the Southern Germans ended up dead last and were relegated weeks before the season's end: 21 goals in 34 matches. Fürth also became the only Bundesliga team ever not to win at home.
