Satoru Iwata has said that the Zelda team is feeling under pressure to live up to the standards set by Capcom's Monster Hunter Tri.
Monster Hunter Tri is widely acknowledged to be one of the best looking games on the console and in the latest Iwata Asks discussion, Nintendo's president paid tribute to the achievements of Capcom's Kaname Fujioka and Ryozo Tsujimoto.
"Nintendo's staff have been galvanised by Capcom. I can tell they feel like you did what they hadn't yet," said Iwata. "Besides, the enthusiasm you put into it is apparent in the graphics."
Iwata clearly believes the game proves that developers can create visually stunning games for the Wii if they put the effort in. "Looking at the graphics objectively, I feel like the game's visuals are one of the representative examples of what can ultimately be done with Wii," he said. "I think it has placed the Zelda team under a considerable amount of pressure."
The game's producer Ryozo Tsujimoto insisted it was all part of the plan. "The first project planning document that we wrote said, "Let's make the best graphics ever seen on the Wii console!"
Monster Hunter Tri will be released for Wii on 23 April. Do you think it is the best looking game on Wii?
Zelda? Under pressure? Good, maybe the next Zelda will actually be good this time as the last three have been really under par for what I expect from Nintendo, if I'm paying 100$ for a game I expect it to be top quality, not the meh that the last three were.
It's like asking "Is this the most beautiful - yet ugly girl you've ever seen?".
I jest. I love my Wii. I would actually consider buying this but considering most retailers seem to want more than the price of a 360 or PS3 game I'm inclined to say "I'll wait".
I for one can't wait for MHT, preordered the day it appeared on Amazon, and have picked up the Wii speak and CC Pro as well. I'll be 'ill' from work when it arrives for at least a week, get some Daddy time while the kids are at school.
Funny, because up until Monster Hunter Tri, Super Mario Galaxy was generall universally agreed to have the best looking visuals for the Wii. I've not seen enough of MH 3 to say if this is true, though I will be able to when I get my copy
