Final Fantasy XIII sells out in Japan

Day one sales "exceeded one million"
Final Fantasy XIII has launched and predictably blitzed the Japanese retail scene, with day one sales having "exceeded one million", says Square Enix.

Earlier this week the publisher revealed it had shipped 1.15 million copies for the super RPG's first week on sale in Japan, with more due next week. Basically, it's sold out almost immediately.

According to Square Enix (via Kotaku), the 1 million sales number doesn't take in to account copies sold bundled with sexy PS3 "Lightning Edition" packs. So in reality, even more copies could be in punters' hands.

FFXIII will be released in Europe and North America dated on March 9, 2010, on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Well done. Could this end up outdoing "MW2" in terms of first week sales once you combine the first week sales in Japan and later on the "first week" sales in Europe and North America? It's possible.

That's insane when you consider that there are only 4 million PS3's in Japanese homes.

Saying that, I bet those FF edition PS3's are being snapped up right now.

This will shift a bucket load of PS3's

Quite frankly why M$ allowed SE to add the clause of exclusivity in Japan for this game I'll never know.

Paying for it on 360 is worthless without Japan.

Good to see a decent JRPG kicking up a fuss in the east. The money from this game will pay for many more.

Wow. Can't wait!

"Quite frankly why M$ allowed SE to add the clause of exclusivity in Japan for this game I'll never know. "

Probably because Sony didnt allow it. They bought the exclusive for Japan. Buying it for the whole world would have cost too much. And conquering Japan, as its their home turf, was priority nr 1.

This game will be the first real game to make the PS3 a must-buy for them (u2 is probably too western for them). The last Guardian and GT5 will probably be the second.

they didn't buy the exclusive for japan i dont think. square enix decided not to release it there becase of the tiny 360 user base. with the cost of porting the game to 360 only for it to sell a fraction of what it would on ps3 i dont think they deemed it as a worthy investment. that sounds more logical to me than sony buying exclusivity, especially in only one region

nice one final fantasy 13, lets hope you can break modern warfare 2's titles of best first week sales. i think this is possible if its sold 1.15m in japan on its first day, when combined with the rest of the worlds first week sales when its released its quite possible.

Actually Sony have quite a lot of shares in Square Enix, so I would pretty much bet that played a large part of it.

Also, SE still respect Sony and likewise as earlier games in the series wouldn't have been possible without the playstation.

I will pick this up on the PS3, I firmly feel its at home on the playstation (but thats my preference). But for those people that make a mockery of the game coming on multiple discs on the 360, dont forget, ff7,8,9 came out on multiple discs and I can honestly say, swapping discs every 30 hours in didn't for a moment cause any hassle.

So no matter what platform you have, enjoy it when it comes out as its going to be a blinder!

But hell, dont that LE FF13 PS3 look darn good!

@starvinbull

the reason they made it a ps3 exclusive in japan is because the number of 360's in japan is nothing. The total sales for 360 is japan was under 250k systems in the last two years, kinda useless to bring it out for that system there eh? 360 only sold around 90-110k systems this year there (it was the best year for 360 there but as u can see not very good)
