Famitsu gives Bayonetta 40/40

First Xbox game to join the mag's elite list
Famitsu has given Sega's action-packed slap-'em-up a perfect 40/40 score. Yeah, we were pretty surprised, too.

This makes it the first Xbox 360 game to get a perfect score from the respected Japanese mag, who's only ever rated 11 other titles top marks, including Dragon Quest IX and Monster Hunter Tri this year, according to Kotaku.

Watch tons of other great game videos in HD over on our video channel!

The game is developed by Platinum Games, and produced by Yusuke Hashimoto, who also did the first Devil May Cry game on PS2 - and you can see the resemblances there. It looks cool, but is it that good?

We'll tell you when we get our hands on the final game, although it's not due out here until early next year. Bummer.

But the game id on the PS3 too, right? Or is it just the fact it was reviewed on the 360 and got that score?

I downloaded the demo from the Japanese Marketplace and what can I say ... it is Bonkers!

Only the 2 scenarios available in the demo but even from that the amount of moves and combos you can put together in the demo is frightening.

It is deffo Japanese though, through and through.

Very very wacky & zany!
StonecoldMC on 20 Oct '09
Demo kicked ass and im in no doubt the full game will deliver the same

I think they played the 360 version.

Having played the demo for both i have to say the 360 version looks better. but not by much. they're pretty much identical.

Also Didn't Last Remanat get a perfect score from famitsu. Seeing as the PS3 version doesn't look like its ever going to see the light of day that'd make it a 360 game now.

Nope. It got a high score, but not top marks all round.

You have to take Jap reviews with a pinch of salt. Remember they lap up anything with giant talking frogs and scantily clad ladies.
FiltyMonkey on 20 Oct '09
hey, everyone loves talking frogs and scantily clad ladies. right.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 20 Oct '09
demo was cool, very good and slick. but not even a close 40/40. not sure even 35/40.

Slightly off topic, but I've always liked Famitsu as a review system. The fact is, to get a very good score, you have to convince FOUR reviewers.

EGM in the states used to be similar (probably still is), but even our own UK mags, like Crash and ZZap (in the earlier days) used to get 3 reviewers opinions and average them to get the overall score.

Wish someone would bring that model back here. It used to be that you'd learn which reviewers has most similar tastes to yourself and could often consider their score more important than the overall. But to get an award, you'd have to get a good score from all the reviewers. Crash's system of having 1 main reviewer, and 2 "criticism" boxes with smaller reviews was spot on.

Those were the days..

If they gave The Last Remnant a descent score I wouldn't trust any of the reviews! I thought it was terrible! Maybe beyond terrible.

Though I am looking forward to Bayonetta so... erm... yeah.
MrPirtniw on 20 Oct '09
Didn't Famitsu give Haze 37/40?

@Eltonbird: IGN sometimes do a review with a section at the bottom with another reviewers opinion in, but then again IGN is a terrible place, personally.

Those definitely were the days. I still have a load of those mags in the loft.

Not sure about the score, but I have only seen vids of this. Looked like a standard Devil May Cry Clone. Goes to show, you can't judge a game from just footage, maybe.
kimoak on 20 Oct '09
I'm still not seeing it, it's just DMC with lady parts (probably why Famitsu gave it such a high score).
GTCzeero on 20 Oct '09
Not sure if it's true, but I did read that Famitsu show their reviews to developers before they publish them ... hmmm ...
slothfull9 on 20 Oct '09
I really enjoyed the Jap demo but I didn't think it was that special. Great fun to play but it was super cheesey. More cheesey than DMC4 infact.

I lost my respect for Famitsu when they gave Nintendogs 40/40.
Squall5005 on 21 Oct '09
The PS3 version was also reviewed, and scored 38/40.

Don't ask me why, I've not played either version and I can't read japanese. I just saw the scans on some N4G headline and skipped the article.
Asaron on 21 Oct '09
i thought it was an ok game, but if you look at the list of perfect 40 games from Famitsu magazine, I don't really belive it deserves its place.
I think the four reviewers were a bit too taken in by the lady on the cover!
