inFamous

A shocking spin on the Spider-Man formula
Infamous is one of Sony's biggest games of the year so far. It's also got one of the coolest openings in a game we've ever seen.

The moment you press start there's a flash of light, pedestrians scream and put their hands over their faces, cars and lights pop and fizz with electricity, and the camera pans round to reveal utter carnage. The whole thing's done in seamless real-time. It's a special start for what Sony hopes is a special game.

You, playing as Cole, wake up to find yourself lying at the epicentre, almost as if you caused it. What the hell happened? We'll leave you to find out for yourself but we can say that inFamous, unlike Crackdown, has a dark, grinding plot presented via comic strip cut scenes.

Fitting they are too, because Cole is like a comic book hero himself. With Spider-Man agility and Jedi-like powers he leaps and clambers around the city with Assassin's Creed-like ease, seeing off enemies with electric attacks.

Controlling Cole is simple and satisfying - he clings onto any surface, ledge or wire. Leaping from the roof of a tower block to land on a wire, or jumping from the top of one pole to another, is no problem.

Your basic attack is the lightening bolt, a straight and quick electric blast from Cole's right hand which can be shot infinitely.

The shock grenades are more fun, working like powerful sticky grenades that cause plenty of damage to enemies (and innocent bystanders if you're not careful). The Shockwave power is like a Jedi Force Push, violently repelling rockets, cars, enemies and anything in your way, while the Megawatt Hammer is a slow-moving energy ball that explodes on impact. You can also slam downwards from a height, sending a powerful shockwave rippling through the ground.

Using these later weapons depletes a charge meter at the top of the screen, which you need to recharge by draining power from any electronic device in the city. It's an interesting ammo mechanic that gets you thinking about your environment and your angle of approach.

As you lay the electrical smack down on enemies and complete missions you earn experience points which you spend on upgrades.

The basic leccy shot becomes a spreading beam that leaps from one enemy to another if you hit your target in the head, while the Megawatt Hammer becomes a guided missile. Later on you can summon giant lighting bolts from the sky and obliterate entire streets in seconds.

It takes around six or seven hours to get to that stage, but that's when being Cole feels empowering. Some goon fires a bullet your way and before he's realised his mistake you just raise your glowing arms and annihilate him so hard his mother feels it.

Cool thing is you don't have to use your powers for good - inFamous has a Karma system that judges you on your actions, deeming you evil or good depending on what you do.

This ranges from simple things like not killing pedestrians to making moral decisions during 'Karma Moments'. Do you let civilians take a food shipment, or do you blast them to bits and keep it for yourself? Do you pump black diseased tar into the water supply or rip the poison canisters off the pipes, splashing yourself with the harmful goo?

Being good or bad not only effects the way the public react to you (they take pictures if you're good, throw stones if you're not) but the way you look too.

There are also certain powers that are unique to being good or evil. The evil Lightening Bolt can be turned into a constant stream, and the Evil Megawatt Hammer can be shot in threes. In general, the evil versions of the weapons cause more giant explosions and aren't as tidy to use, which is fine because frying a few bystanders when you're evil isn't an issue.

But all this flashy stuff didn't stop us from craving the more basic of abilities, namely being able to drive cars, or pick up and shoot guns.

When you spend hours on end shooting sparks at people it'd just be a nice relief to grab a chain gun or rocket launcher and blast off some hot metal, you know? After all, the hooded mutant-like thugs you fight drop guns, rockets and all sorts on the floor. Why can't we pick them up?

And without cars, navigation can be tedious. The city's three islands are pretty big and objectives sometimes have you doing a fair bit of trawling. Now, Cole can speed along train rails or electrical cables in a blaze of sparks, but they're not direct enough.

And if you make a mistake and fall to the floor it takes too long to climb back up again - it's not like Crackdown where a few super jumps gets you there.

All that considered, by the time you mess about climbing, picking a route over the electricity cables or make your way to the train tracks, it's usually quicker to just run through the streets to your targets, which can be dull, even if the city does look incredible.

The rooftops are littered with 'collectibles' of sorts too; Blast Shards which you collect to increase your maximum stored power, and Dead Drops which are satellite dishes with encoded messages in them. But again, getting around in Crackdown is much easier.

The missions are varied and mostly fun - you'll defend outposts, shoot down flying planes, scale buildings on treasure hunts, power up trains, rescue friends from huge enemy bases and all sorts.

inFamous' comic-style action, spectacular powers, gorgeous city and gripping story make it one of the best games so far this year for PS3 owners.

It has its frustrations and we miss burning around in a car or the rumble of some good old-fashioned gunpowder, plus we think Crackdown pips it in the open-world action game league. But that won't stop you having a very amusing 25 hours of gaming (play it through twice, once good and once evil, and it's even longer).

This actually looks like a blast. I am so tempted to get a PS3 now, after refusing to even consider it for so long.

The pad is shocking though, they really need to sort those sticks and the triggers out.

It's not a deal breaker though and as I may try and get one by the end of the year. Still holding out for a price cut though.

Now that Team Ico are showing their hand the console looks viable to me.

Looking forward to E3 to see what both Microsoft and Sony have up their sleeves.

Great review guys and I will most certainly be picking this up very soon but I have one problem

"A few guns would have made it more fun"

Why would you need guns?

You have super powers!!! What use would guns be when you can fire electricity out of your hands ?!?!!?

In all honesty, I really dont think that is a valid bad point with the game....
Posted by Lt3spyanation
Good review, but I just have one problem

"But again, getting around in Crackdown is much easier. "

"...- it's not like Crackdown where a few super jumps gets you there. "

What's with the comparisons between these two games? It just seems stupid.
Posted by smithster118
That was the score I was expecting. I'm not sure why you gave it a negative point because it didn't have guns. If he is a superhero then why would he need guns. :?
Posted by blagger
Well i loved Crackdown, so i'm definitely getting this even if it's not as good.
Posted by ledickolas
Because both involve superhero type characters, where you level up your abilities in an open city.

About as valid a comparison as there ever was.

Not sure why guns would make the game better. Might as well wish for driving in Spiderman.
Posted by alano0031
This game does look awesome im definetly purchasing it. If its as good as Spiderman 2 was im gonna be chuffed. Also I couldn't care less if travelling is a pain as I completed Far Cry 2 and the travel in that was so tedious.

Like people have already said why would u want guns when u can use lightning bolts etc. However I can understand frustration that you can't pick them up if they have been dropped. It just seems a little dare I say it "last gen". Maybe the PS3 can't handle it. Just joking.

P.S Is there gonna be the same uproar that this didn't get 9.5 like there was with Killzone 2. Come on get a grips CVG is not biased. It is just the reviewers opinion. Hence it can't be wrong.

P.P.S I only own a PS3, so shut it xbots lol. I've always wanted to say that. Just joking but prepare yourselves.

demo next week will make or break it for me because there's too many "open world" type games out soon - Prototype & Red Faction III.

be very tedious playing 3 similar games on the same time, granted they all have their own twist but it will still be go there and do this on the map type gameplay.
Posted by Lt3spyanation
Yeah it's a valid comparison but is there any need for this -

"...plus we think Crackdown pips it in the open-world action game league."

It's a review of the game not a comparison of which game is better Crackdown or InFamous.
Posted by ensabahnur
i always wondered why there was a Spidey-mobile toy car?
Posted by lonewolf2002
Sounds good but personally I am waiting for the reviews of Prototype to come in before making a decision, as both games seem similar, but from the previews Prototype might just edge it out with more variety but we will see.
Posted by lonewolf2002

Lots of reviews do the same thing so you can gauge how it stands to a similar title, well thats how I see it anyway. 8)
Posted by Mark240473
Decent score and fairly good review. However.... Why, Oh why do you have to turn reviews into flamebait? Quit with the comparisons of games from different systems please! It was the same with Killzone 2 and Gears 2(!)/Halo 3. All that will happen is 100's of mental posts comparing the 2 games in question!

Ah... I get it... Nice one, CVG!

Anyway, looking forward to Infamous. And if I wanted to drive cars around an open world city, shooting people with guns, I would fire up GTA4. Nah, looking forward to frying some bad (and good!) guys next weekend!

Oh, and for the record, I enjoyed Crackdown. But that was then and this is now, so give it a rest people! LIVE IN THE NOW!! :D
Posted by StonecoldMC
To all those complaining about the comparisons between this and Crackdown; calm down Dear, its only a review  .

Looks like a good score for a new IP and if it plays similiar to Crackdown (OMG, I just mentioned Crackdown, shoot me!!!) then the Game should be good fun.

Another one for the back catalogue when I get my PS3.
Posted by bunneyo
looks cool, cant wait! again though why does it need gta elements to make it better??? cvg get a grip
Posted by Lt3spyanation
Lol, I just don't want CVG waving the flamebait flag around.

so glad i have a ps3.this is one of my must have games this year.just hoping that heavy rain is as good as it looks because that is probably goty material.now i played crackdown and loved it however, the lack of a decent story seriously hampered it and to me infamous looks like the quintessential superhero game.next week can't come soon enough, glad i saved up for this but at the cost of kz2 but hey fps games are a dime a dozen these days and the comic book geek inside took control.infamous ftw
Posted by voodoo341
Do CVG start every PS3 exclusive game review with that default statement?

I've been playing the inFamous demo for a few days now and it's bloody excellent. It's a lot more depth to it than Crackdown and unlike GTA4 you will want to explore every inch of the city. The level of detail shown in the graphics is impressive.
Posted by fanboy
I played the demo myself and so i can totally understand the comparison with Crackdown - its very, very similar.

I can sort of see where they are coming from with the guns and all that, but in my opinion I thought they may have mentioned that the combat is a little more in depth and strategic than it was in Crackdown and the controls and movement are a definate improvement and much more fluid.

Just my opinion that though.

I agree with them about the driving, but then again when you do get the hang of Infamous and you are grinding along the rope things that connect all the buildings together then that is really sweet.

Overall a good review, and another great game on the PS3. With uncharted to come soon and the news of Trico today, the future is looking very bright for sonys machine. God of War 3 and GT5 I reckon will dominate E3 aswell, along with MW2 of course.
Posted by fanboy
Im glad you said that, cos I thought that was a massive part of the game (the depth) and I thought they might have made a bit more of it.

Personally I think the combat is just superb in the Demo. you cant just wade in there like you can in Crackdown.

The combat in crackdown compared to infamous is like comparing Saints Row to GTA4. One of them might be alot of fun, but the other is ultimatley more rewarding in the long term.
Posted by Little Moth
I'm sure the reviewers opinion that you should be able to use guns and vehicles is a good one. I mean, none of you (the people that say that "there should be guns" isn't a valid argument) have played the game for 25 hours and completed it. Which means you don't know what will annoy you when you play this game. Maybe when you finally get your hands on it and play it for a while, you will think that having to use electrical attacks the entire game is a bit repetetive? Then, maybe you will glance at that rocket launcher lying on the street and think "I wish I could get my hands on that and blow some shit up." And maybe after falling down from an electric wire for the third time and having to climb back up you will think "I wish I cold just highjack that sexy looking car and get to my bloody destination."

You guys get my meaning?

Play the damn game first, then judge the judge people.
Posted by wiikii007
Why, these days, dose every game have to have guns in it?! The game is about a guy with super powers, he dosen't need a gun.
Posted by fanboy
@littlemoth

I think thats a bit harsh.

I mean a few of us have actually played it, and the demo is BIG - about an hours worth of gameplay were you can get a good feel for the gameplay mechanics and a full island to explore.

I concede that theres no way for me to judge if it becomes repetitive or not, but all Im saying is that the depth of the combat is much better than I expected thats all. I do agree with the reviewer though in that it would have been a nice bonus to be able to use the guns. Maybe you could have got bad Karma for it.

As for falling off the wires though, well that just doesnt really happen. You just shoot across them and so you cant really fall off, the control is sort of removed in those sections.

Maybe cars would have been nice, but I do think that maybe would have taken away from the super hero vibe you get from the game. I mean, you wouldnt see Superman or spiderman driving around in a Seat Ibiza would you?!

the infamous bundle on play.com now for 280 including the game in a limitd edtion box.

looks fu****in amazing

aparently theres the ratchet and clank one with 2 controllers as that games oly 14.99 to make up the difference. and infamous is brand new, and one player, so its cool either way.
Posted by lonewolf2002
You mentioned Crackdown,........GTFO.
Posted by Little Moth
Haha, I was just got a little annoyed about all the whining...
Posted by lonewolf2002
With the amount of backlash from this it looks like the fanboy baiting is working wonders doesn't it.
Posted by fanboy
@ littlemoth

Yeah i know what you mean, it gets really hard to actually have an opinion in a thread like this these days without being lumped in with the people that think anything below 9.7 is a bad score.
Posted by alano0031
Like I said earlier its plain and simple the PS3 cant handle the guns as well as lightning lol
Posted by sweatyBallacks?
If you want guns people should go and play the thousands of other titles released this generation that features them

Can you use guns in the Spiderman games? Can you use guns in any of the X-Men games??

No.

I agree with pretty much everyone here. The criticism of there being no guns is stupid. The main character is a superhero with magic electric power ffs
Posted by Little Moth
Some people (like the reviewer) would like the option of using guns and there's nothing wrong with that. The game does not give you that option, and that must have made the game less enjoyable to play for the reviewer, which is why he put it as a downer. It's just an opinion, so relax.
Posted by coolpro
I've played the demo & this is a good game!

What Prince of Persia should have been in many ways ... marketing ploy or not anyhow the free demo had me popping to my local GAME to place my pre order the next morning!

I'll be px'ing my Prince & Spidey for this one ... I wonder if there's any DLC planned?

:D

PS - In the short demo I played I didn't, personally, miss guns but the thought of hopping in a car did appeal ... I guess were all so used to GTA etc ...
Posted by lowrider007
"A few guns would have made it more fun"

Please tell me this is a joke, holds head in hand, this isn't GTA, and it also isn't Crackdown, my god you could of given this game a 10/10 and your review would've still failed, seriously, Cole's electrical powers are the weapons, your basic electric attack is the same as shooting a gun, you also have electric grenades that are essentially the same as 'standard' grenades, but no, I guess you also want regular grenades as well yes? lol.
Posted by sweatyBallacks?
»

The more I think of that criticism, the more stupid it sounds.

The 'I just would like to pick up a rocket-launcher' bit sounded stupid, childish and ignorant.

It is like expecting to swing through the skies as Spiderman in a game then pulling out a machine gun in one hand. Bloody stupid. The reviewer is an idiot.

For the record, I'm probably not going to get this game. The demo was good but these are harsh times for me so I'm saving for the second half of the year.

But that criticism just annoyed me. I think the name of the reviewer should be displayed at the bottom so we know whether it is worth reading next time (or so we can send them hate mail  ).
Posted by juggalo4life
8.5/10 im not that smart but thats higher then 8/10 like i said it would pass easy :D i told you so..and u know who u are thats one down and prototype will pass aswell :D looks like im here to stay sorry people :P
Posted by ra3v3r
The reviewer was Mike Jackson, it said at the end of the review LOL.

Anyways, this looks like a decent purchase not had anything to play on the old PS3 for a while. The vehicle thing makes more sense to me than guns and the perfect way to fit them in is to give bad karma for a car jacking. That however would involve a longer development time whilst they build a driving model. Adds a new element to the gameplay and it could open up additional mission types.

The guns, probably won't be too fussed as the basic weapons appear to evolve with experience and therefore should feel like a new weapon.

The PS3 is looking like a good long term investment. I was getting itchy feet for a while but future titles are looking promising. The Project Trico video has convinced me to go out and buy Ico and Shadow of the Colossus again. Heavy Rain unfotunately only lools to have the potential to impress a minority of people. That comments gonna get me torched but we all know your everyday gamer won't be bothered about it. How many people passed up Fahrenheit? Great game, poor reception from regular punters.

Like a few others have said though, it's just the guys opinion. Unfortunately opinions are like arseholes...
Posted by dannybuoy
the guy has frickin lightening coming out of his hands.. do you really think the delicate wiring of a cars ignition system would stand up to such high voltage??? ;-) I've had this game on preorder for months.. looking forward to it, but I hope it doesn't become a grind like the 2nd half of GTA4.. that bored me to tears..

Interesting why no ones mentioned PROTOTYPE thus far.. be interesting to see how that fares in reviews.. hopefully it'll be decent too. Which one's best? Who knows.. who cares..! Its a great time to be a gamer!
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
this look like a fun game and one i'll definately be picking up at some point.

I can understand why the reviewer said it'd be nice if you can pick up guns, its an open world game and choice is a vital part of these games and in my opinion the more the merrier. Not being able to pick up guns is a minor quibble and the reviewer said as much. Although i would like to know if i could just walk up to a guy and **** him one. Fair enough the guys got super powers but even superheros forgo using thier powers and punch and kick from time to time.

will be interesting how this compares to prototype.
Posted by Dajmin
The Crackdown comparison is blindingly obvious. Superhero lead character who upgrades abilities, open world, comic style. Comparing exclusives is the best way to let people see what it does and doesn't have. Halo 3 and KZ2, anyone?

Nonetheless, it sounds pretty interesting from a moral standpoint. Just a shame they can't make the decisions more ambiguous - no immediate obvious "good" or "bad" result with effects only appearing over time. I'm also not too convinced I like that all morality-based games change your appearance as well - the murderers and rapists I see on TV all look like regular people to me. Scars and black makeup doesn't just appear on them when they do something wrong :)

I'm still more interested in Prototype than this one, but I'd definitely play it if someone brought it over.
Posted by Mark240473
You can punch and kick in the game to your hearts content. It's just a shame that the reviewer is too busy comparing it to Crackdown to have bothered to tell anybody. Personally, I think that its origins are closer to the Spiderman games, less the swingy bits. I certainly can't imagine Spidy with a gun!

It's a shame because other reviews have mentioned how much fun zipping along electrical cables is, and that the climbing is more fun than POP and Assassins Creed. In fact, it probably is closer to Assassins creed than Crackdown.

But like others have said, it is just an opinion. And to get 8.5, whilst sounding like he'd rather play something else, is an achievement in itself!

Can't wait to try the demo today.
Posted by condemmedman
CRY ME A RIVER. To all fanbois who cannot take any sort of OPINION against their games . He only said it could have done with some more guns he Didn't say it was a sH@t game .
Stop being such whining losers

is it the US or UK thats getting the demo today? only piss thing about the US store is it doesn't usually get updated till about 9pm. still at least my copy of UFC came today so i'll have something to pass the time until this downloads.
Posted by 360_Fan
Note to C&VG staff. Do not say anything negative about, or offer a personal opinion on Sony or any of it's products ever again. Infact, go work at Sony or MS where you are not allowed to have an opinion on anything else but your product. Apparently you are not allowed to unbiased anymore.
Posted by Mark240473
As far as I know, it comes out on Euro PSN today too.

What's the UFC like? Any good? Haven't tried the demo yet.
Posted by Random Hangman
Just out of interest... Are there any guns in this game?
Posted by ensabahnur
»won't know until i gets home from work. the demo's great though, been playing it nearly every night.
hopefully the euro PSN gets the inFamous demo so i can start downloading it when i get in. nothing worse than having to wait for the US store to get updated.

...and in a way it could be argued that you are kicking off the show with the first "mental post" of the thread. Sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy if I may!

Personally, I think it is ludicrous not to compare two games which are...how to say...comparable.

By your logic it would be very wrong of Jeremy Clarkson to compare a BMW with the similar Mercedes offering in light of the fact they are different manufacturers?

Surely the reason for comparison is that there are similarities in the price, market, nature of the product - notice that old Jeremy doesn't compare a Mini Cooper with an Aston Martin.

It is a very believable situation that a kid is deciding which console he wants for his birthday and is also a huge fan of comics. Surely he would want to know what is available on both consoles?

I mean just imagine if he bought a PS3 with Infamous only to later realise that he could've had Crackdown instead and for a cheaper price!
Posted by Mark240473
Why do people always bring cars into the equation? Cars are an expensive decision, so can't really be compared to a comparatively cheap entertainment product. That is mental, right there.

In a game/film/music review, all we want to know is, is it any good for fans of that genre? What we don't need[i] to know is the personal preferences of a particular reviewer. It's similar to me reviewing the latest StarTrek film and saying that it could have done with a Jamaican alien sidekick and some slo-mo bullet-ballet sections. StarTrek is a sci-fi, so according to you and CVG, I am well within my rights to say so.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
Posted by English Shmuppet
»

Well, for starters, a review is pretty much always going to be the personal preference of one person unless it is written by a panel of judges - if you want a "meta" view of it go to metacritic instead.

Also, I am not in any way comparing a car to a game/console. My example was that if somebody is going to invest in something they will want to know the alternatives.

You say "In a game/film/music review, all we want to know is, is it any good for fans of that genre?" and I'm afraid I'm going to have to alert you to the inherent wrongness in that statement. Most people want to know what the best game/film/album is.

It would be extremely stupid to buy the worst out of two games on the basis that you only care about it being good and not whether there are better options.

That's the problem with the PS3 generation...they'll settle for a "good" console and spurn the best one.

(that was a joke)
Posted by Mark240473
»»

Well, you hit the nail on the head, right there. It would be my duty to use metacritic to compare games on different systems and not to be force-fed the opinions of a single reviewer, whom obviously prefers one game over the other. He doesn't have to do that job for us because personal taste is irrelevant when reviewing anything because you are trying to cater for a wide demographic.

Other than that, I fully see your point.

Anyway, good to have a grown up chat about it, rather than the usual tripe. :)
Posted by English Shmuppet
Yes, indeed!

...and please don't take any of my more "inflammatory" comments literally. I don't mean any real harm...just a little chafing of the thong! :P

Oooh, watch those Elephant ears!
Posted by svd_grasshopper
firing electricity out of your hand... state of that.

and to the ***** getting defensive about the review.

your a super hero, yes. so you should be able to handle guns and driving. it would have prolonged the game somewhat im sure. giving you more options and more fun. it is after all a sort of sandbox game.

do all super heros use death slides as their mode of transport?!

having the ability the drive about AS WELL as swing around like a monkey and blast people with guns instead of electricity wouldnt have harmed it in the slightest. would probably have bumped it up to a 9, as it would have taken much longer to bore of it. they did mention it gets repetative using the same tactics.

sounds toss anyway.
