QTE's don't tend to bother me as much as others, I just hope they don't have me doing mad kung-fu and leaping over police cars onto a bridge! :) As nice as this looks if all you get to do is watch it and press a few button when indicated its not for me. I was hoping for something special in this title but this has really put me off. meh meh meh... so bored of QTE in games. its just lazy, easy and quite quite dull. what happened to games acutally being tough to complete? .. This looks really amazing. Cant wait to see more of it at E3. It looks pretty far along in development, when is it due out? You have to give props to Quantum Dream for trying somethng like this. It wont be everyones cup of tea but it is a title that ill be keeping an eye on when it gets closer to release next year.
More mature, thought provoking story driven Games please Developers gonna be a wicked game, cant wait for it Why would you give them props? So they can set up some kind of dramatic reconstruction of the movie Alfie? Perhaps some kind of dashing coat, or a bunch of flowers, and of course the iconic glasses.
Tee hee hee, oh I’m such a cad, or as some people might say, a ****.   . Same here, I don't mind QTE's here and there, but if all the action scenes in the game comprise solely of them then this is not for me, hopefully we'll see something a bit more promising at E3. so you just watch a little video and press up down X square when it tells you and nothing else? When I buy a book, I know it'll be up to me to decide when to turn the pages... this game looks less interesting than turning pages... being promted to press a button to watch the cut-scene play out will get a bit boring after a few minutes. Surely this isn't how the whole game plays out?!?!? Looks like it, my optimism for this game has gone sinking down. What did you expect? Did you even play Farenheit? There's more to a game than fancy graphics you know. should watch the heavy rain special on gametrailers tv the devs tell all sorts of interestin things bout the game, games out end of the year I don't like QTEs. They feel disjointed and take you out of the action. I know the idea is that they let you do something "special" that's normally not possible with the regular controls, but that's what jars with me. I'd rather choose whether to run, shoot, jump or whatever, not be forced to press a button (or sequence) to do what the game tells me.
Two gameplay videos and two QTEs. Sadly this is starting to look bad... i like it,something new,i'm tired of dumb shoot&runs, finally a game which you can just sit, relax,THINK by solving some riddles and enjoy the story in great atmosphere. As long as they have lots of those it'll be fine, I reckon this game will split the user-base though. Some'll love it, some'll hate it. I'll probably love it. looks amazing. along with infamous this is why i've bought a ps3 right about now. that is one sexy momma we are going to get to play as. Can't wait for this quantic dream have been one of my favourite devs since The Nomad Soul. Looks like a refined version of the system they used in Farenheit, this is bound to be engaging, adult and mind bending. Fair enough it won't be everybodies cup of tea but i applaud them for putting story ahead of mindless action. I wouldn't like the game to be all qte's, but I know there is more to Heavy Rain than meets the eye. There are the parts where you explore the enviroments for clues using posh investigative tools and in some instances you can skip whole chunks of qte sequences by investigating deeply.
In fact, during that sequence on the video, there are several differing conclusions. You can even avoid the encounter altogether by searching the car lot properly for clues, rather than going into the garage. Otherwise, when you are getting thwacked on top of the car, you can avoid the car crushing scene by knocking the guy out and actually arrest him instead. There are other conclusions as well - and just think that this is one scene of the game. Very ambitious!
I wouldn't get too disenchanted about seeing one qte section of a game.
Also, there is more interaction in HR than in games like Monkey Island and Grim Fandango, but both those games were classics. HR isn't some linear Dragons Lair clone because you control your characters movements for the most part, until fight scenes, and you also choose your own path of many.
I think it looks interesting, but I am aware that it won't be to everyones taste, just like their previous adventure. If I were an xbot, I'm pretty sure I'd be laughing at one of the PS3's flagship titles being little more than an interactive movie.
Thankfully, I'm not an xbot, but unfortunately I do dislike QTE sequences enormously. To me, they represent an industry struggling to adequately express itself.
Born out of good intentions, QTE's are an uncomfortable and unsatisfying half-way house; mechanics that are appropriate to the main bulk of gameplay break down when plot and narrative elements are introduced. Yet at the same time, the designer admirably wishes to avoid the bane of all modern gaming: FMV cut-scenes. So they opt for somewhere in between.
Sadly, the end result is neither cinematically or interactively entertaining. Furthermore, its terribly out-dated. Dragon's Lair effectively approached gameplay in this way over 25 years ago and it was considered restrictive even then. Shenmue, released 10 years ago and in spite of being a fantastic game, was none-the-less criticised for its use of QTE's. Quite how the games industry has largely failed to offer a standard method of immersive story-telling is quite amazing. We can mention Half-Life 2, Bioshock and even sandbox games like GTA or Oblivion but all too often, games defer to cut-scenes or obtrusive mechanics such as QTE's.
So that said, Heavy Rain better tell one hell of a story, because if people are genuinely looking forward to gameplay this archaic, we might as well start crossing our fingers for a sandbox update of Manic Miner. Just a question: Did you play their previous game Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy? Shenmue had QTE and gamers loved that game. This seems to be taking QTE to another level.
I suppose it's just sour grapes for the people bashing the game on here before it's even released/reviewed.
I'm looking forward it. you guys are meh.
follow up to QTE heavy game has....QTE!!! who would have thought, massive shock. If you didnt like Faharenhiet then you wont like this, simple. If gamers loved Shenmue we'd have news of Shenmue 3 by now. :( Very true. I think HR will be a breath of fresh air amongst the usual shooting/driving/sporting yearly sequels.
And it's better to have a choice, than not. QTE does not bother me, We will see more of this at E3. yippppppe. The fresh air has really hit me. :) The sales for HR will probably lack the same as the Shemnue games. Some will no doubt call it a flop. The rest of us will just enjoy it for what it is and it will probably be remembered in 10 years time as a milestone. Years later, Thousands of fans will yell for a sequel, but because of the blinkered fools who dismiss these types of games would rather play COD 5/6/7/8/9, etc, the calls will be ignored.
Joy. it would be better if it looked as good as it does and you can have full control over your character. surely they can still use the story branching system as well as letting you have full control? all the qte puts me off, i think i'd get bored very quickly. Never a truer word spoken mark.
Mindless *******s! Farenheit was probably the biggest disappointment I've ever had playing a videogame. That and the time I bought A Boy And His Blob for the Gameboy. You do get full control over your character. These QTE's are just one aspect of the game. the bit were he puts the glasses on is the bit you control properly looking for clues and such.
nice link on the video though to call of juerez.
looks good I can't wait for this game, I loved the way Fahrenheit tried to do things a bit differently (except for the plot at the end, that wasn't great). Although QTE's get on my nerves in some games, it looks like this one may have integrated them well rather than them becoming a nuisance (hello Resi 5). Also, as others have stated, you will have control over your character for the investigative sections and such. oh right, my mistake. that sounds better then. Let me just warn the CVG reviewer for when he writes the review in the future:
There will very probably be no 'chain gun or rocket launcher to blast off some hot metal' in this game. So don't use that as an excuse to bash the game when you review it er...Mike.
Thanks :-) »
You're probably bang-on the money there.
:) From Mark's description I am even more excited for this game. Never played Indigo Prophecy/Farenheit, are they one and the same or not? I have Indigo Prophecy set up on my gamefly que and will be playing it in a few weeks hopefully. This is looking nice I must admit, although I am in the 50/50 camp until we get more gameplay details.
For those asking is this going to be all QTE's then as previous posters have said the answer is no like Farenheit before it. Hell Alan Wake might be all QTE's for what little we do know about it. The more I see of Heavy Rain the more interested in it I become. That looks excellent, hopefully we'll see a lot more at E3. I wonder what happened the female reporter seen in the first clip? It's begining to look like Heavy Rain and Uncharted 2 will be taking up most of my gaming time this Christmas. Shenmue is one of the very few games that managed to pull off Q.T.E and thats only because it used it very sparingly, If heavy rain is to pull it off they need to hit the right balance otherwise its back to Road Avenger days and thats not good. Though I enjoyed Farenheit, I always hoped QTEs would have been left behind last gen. Instead they've been taken to the gaming industry's bosom with gusto.
I am torn however over this game, because the QTE's were done really well in Farenheit, they didn't seem unobtrusive and usually made sense to what you're doing on screen. The presentation of the buttons on screen is really quite snazzy too.
I'm more concerned over the quality of the story for this game as Farenheit shot itself in both feet with that ending.
So, I'll forgive it it's QTE nature as long as it makes sense for the game. Ater this though, I want developers to start taking the next evolutionary step and stop clinging to old designs to further the dignity of story telling in games. Valve is still miles ahead. Good god man! Did they NEED to make him look like Max Payne? The reporter was never part of the game she was just used for the gameplay trailer/demo nothing more. That's not what they said on the QD web site. »
Well what did they say? As all the interviews with QD that I have read recently(most recent is on last weeks 1up.coms HR week long look at it) they have said the reporter was only ever for the demo, they had few characters they were experimenting with in the building of the game so far as to call them virtual actors auditioning for a part. I was going to buy Farenheit on XBL because I'd heard so many good things about it but decided against it when I heard it was effectively an interactive movie.
I'd rather just sit down and watch a good film than wait for a game to tell me when I need to press a specific button or else it'll stop telling me the story. As this quote from Wikipedia sums up:
Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw of Zero Punctuation frequently speaks out against them, describing them as his "old nemesis", simplifying their implementation to "press X to not die,"
and 1up.com's Heavenly Sword preview...
Some points in key battles (usually with bosses) integrate QTE (quick-time events), which fans of Shenmue and Indigo Prophecy might like, but which we've been doing since Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. Time to move on, gents.
Surely in 2009 there's a better way of telling a story and giving the player at least the impression its them who are making the decsions in a game? |
