Dirt 2 gets X Games - screens

Trio of events are "pinnacle" of racing sequel, says Codies
Colin McRae: DiRT 2 is to include three new ESPN X Games stages.

The three stages - X Games America, X Games Europe and X Games Asia - will carry official X Games branding and "infuse added realism by bringing the series' unique action sports atmosphere to the game," it claims.

The X Games events will be headlined by off-road racing faces Ken Block, Dave Mirra, Tanner Faust and Travis Pastrana.

Codies points out that X Games 14 Rally Car Racing gold medallist, Pastrana competed with the late Colin McRae at X Games 12 (2006) before going on to feature in and lend his voice to the original Colin McRae: DiRT.

Each X Games event will consist of two knockout rounds before being rounded off with a final held at locations including London (X Games Europe), Tokyo (X Games Asia) and Los Angeles (X Games America).

The X Games America competition is identified from the very start of the game as the "pinnacle event" in Colin McRae: DiRT 2's racing world, it says.

"We've been inspired by the flair, style and big event atmosphere of ESPN's X Games series, which has switched on a new generation of action sports fans to rally and off-road racing." said senior exec producer, Gavin Raeburn.

"It's been incredible to work with them to shape a series of exclusive X Games integrations for Colin McRae: DiRT 2. Gamers will experience three major competitions that will make them feel like they're really arrived on the world's premiere racing stage, competing in front of thousands of fans in dramatic and spectacular stadium events."

Surely this will be the last so-called "Colin McRae" game with name in the title. I wonder what the next one will be called...

DIRT 3: X Games
Travis Pastrana: DIRT 3
Ken Block: DIRT 3
DIRT 3: F*CK WRC
DIRT 3: What's rallying?
DIRT 3: America
Colin Who?: Dirt 3

This game is obviously now aimed at a American audience. There is absolutely no point in keeping Colin's name as it has no longer anything to do with what he was all about. Even if he did race at the X games once, Colin Mcrae is about RALLY good old fashion style.

I guess we will just have to hope that the use of the WRC license in GT5 is any good as it will be the only place we will get our rally fix.

well thats the finall nail in the coffin of a once great gaming series. as the comment above states its gonna have to be gt5 for the real rally afficinado from now on. and to think how spoilt we were for a rally fix last gen: mc rae 3-5, v-rally 3, richard burns rally, wrc series, shox, that one with the race of champions licence, gt3-4, toca race driver 2-3 and mabey a few more. come to think of it sim racing (and licenced championship racing) has faired fairly badly this gen so far, hopefully forza 3 shift and gt5 will change that.

Come on, get a grip, it's the second Dirt game, hence it's gonna be more of the same, it isn't pretending to be WRC. If you don't want that, don't get it.

I think it looks awesome.

stickmus, don't worry fella I won't be wasting my money on this. No doubt it's aimed directly at you but you have to understand what's happened to this game has annoyed many long-term followers of the original McRae series. And now it's aimed at schoolboys and Americans who don't care for the thrill and excitement of racing around the world, on a variety of surfaces from gravel to snow, tarmac to mud, dusty tracks to ice covered roads. Racing around country lanes, hilly roadsides, snakey mountain passes, bumpy tracks, forests, farms, and remote villages. Practically any location outside of a city was a possible route for rallying – some perilous, some outrageous – but always fun... that was Colin McRae rallying, once! So if you think people are being dramatic, then perhaps you'll never have an understanding of how much fun a game can be. Or how p***ed off a gamer can be with a developer that's utterly ruined a game for an audience that knows nothing of the sport it was originally based on. But hey, who cares as long as it looks awesome right, nothing else matters!!!!

Haha, yeah, I'm neither a schoolboy or American. I played the original CM to death. Still doesn't stop this looking like a lot of fun.

It's not the same game, but they've done that anyway. I actually think it's a good thing that they're not just pumping out CM08, CM09, CMXX like some sporting franchises do year on year. They're actually developing a game over time, fair enough, it's not going in the way you want it to, but how you can say that it's not for you without actually playing the game I don't know.

And anyway, it was never about the looks, it was about the handling, if the cars handle properly who cares if you're driving in an X-Games franchise or a WRC franchise?

As I say, I'm really looking forward to this one.
