Service personnel join Boris to launch London Poppy Day

London Mayor Boris Johnson has launched the third London Poppy Day outside City Hall. Joined by Royal Navy Logistician Zoe Braithwaite, Guardsman Adam Deer and RAF Corporal Jenny Long, the Mayor launched a massive fundraising effort by 1,000 collectors, who will target 60 tube stations across the capital on Thursday 3 November, in a bid to raise £500,000 in 12 hours – the most ambitious day of fundraising in The Royal British Legion’s history.

Assembly hears new ideas to help make childcare more affordable and accessible for London families

Loan schemes to cover upfront costs and local networks of out-of-hours providers could help make childcare more affordable and accessible for families in the capital, the London Assembly heard today.

The Assembly’s Health and Public Services Committee was told that families in London are more reliant on formal childcare than those living in other parts of the UK[1] as well as facing above average costs[2].

Assembly examines role of mentoring in averting youth crime

The London Assembly Time for Action Panel will tomorrow question the following guests about the provision of youth services in London and the role of mentoring in averting youth crime. Assembly to examine 2012 stadium deal and riot regeneration funding

The London Assembly’s Economy, Culture and Sport (ECS) Committee will next week hold back-to-back public sessions focusing on the future of the Olympic Stadium and the regeneration of London’s riot-hit town centres.

The Assembly’s Planning and Housing Committee today welcomes many of the Mayor’s proposals in its response to the revision of his housing strategy, and makes a number of recommendations of its own that it would like to see the Mayor adopt.

Assembly to examine policing costs of August disturbances and the 2012 Games

Members of the London Assembly will tomorrow focus on two significant issues affecting London’s policing budget: the costs of the August disturbances and security for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Budget and Performance Committee Members will ask how much the Met is likely to have to spend on policing the Games and how this is being factored into Government funding decisions.

Mayor accelerates delivery of public land to provide more homes

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, announced today that around 3,500 new homes will be built on public land that has been unlocked for development across London.

The Mayor, who is on track to deliver a record 50,000 affordable homes by spring 2012, is accelerating the release of Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) owned plots of land as part of a commitment to help get more homes built for Londoners and support the capital's economy.
