The Faculty of Law cultivates the social scientific thinking ability and rational sense of judgment that make it possible to build the institutions and mechanisms to compatibly achieve public order and individual rights in our complex and quickly changing modern society, and fosters people who can demonstrate their practical abilities in the real world. To help students get the broad horizons they need for this purpose, we have made some unique innovations in the curriculum, such as letting students freely choose classes in various areas by reducing the proportion of required subjects in their specialties, and holding omnibus classes in which instructors including those from other faculties change off teaching. We also endow students with real problem-solving ability through much discussion in small-group seminars.

Cultivating concrete problem-solving abilities with rational thinking The Department wants to give students the ability to use the law in resolving specific problems that arise in society, instead of having them spend all their time memorizing and comprehending law texts and precedents. For that purpose the Department nurtures in students a flexible intellect and rich sensitivity, helps them develop a legal mind characterized by logical thinking and the ability to make fair judgments, and confers upon them the kind of rational thinking ability that can come to terms with contemporary society with its diverse array of values.

Fostering the ability and human qualities to lead groups By learning how and under what mechanisms groups of people act in different venues of contemporary society, students refine the social scientific thinking that can deal with all social phenomena. This Department also builds in students the decision-making ability to take leadership in groups, and the organizing and implementing ability to translate decisions into action. In this way, the Department aims to nurture human qualities that win trust from everyone.
