Brief Constitutional & Military History of India

Note: for a fuller imperial constitutional history see British Empire and Commonwealth
Constitutional history: The English East India Company began to exploit the subcontinent in 1608, and Britain assumed direct rule in 1858.  India consisted of crown territories and 620 protected princely states. Limited autonomous rule was established in 1919 and 1935.  Muslim-Hindu dissension led to the partition of India into two independent nations in 1947.  India became a republic 1950.  What was once British India now consists of four sovereign nations:  India, Burma, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
