Constitutional history:  Burma was separated from British India in 1937.  Occupied by Japan 1942-44. Independence 1948 as a republic outside the Commonwealth.  Central government faced escalating civil war with the Karens, Chin, Kayah and Kachin, and was overthrown by military coup of hardliners 1962.  Political and economic problems continued to worsen when Saw Maung seized power in 1988 and established State Law and Order Restoration Council Name officially changed to Myanmar 1989. National League for Democracy won landslide electoral victory in 1990, but military government refused to step aside.
