After a hic-cup with delivery (which was very promptly resolved I must add) I am very pleased with my purchase. Can't fault it. I think that having upgraded from an older 7" Kindle HD model made it so much easier to navigate the menu structure of this new addition to the Kindle Fire family.
Setting up the screen fonts/sizes for ease of reading the screen, books and internet pages is a lot more flexible than on earlier generations of the Fire family
Setting up Email accounts is the most straightforward process I have ever come across.
Connection to the internet via wifi is still as easy as ever.
It really is a device ideally suitable for the most avid of technophobes among us!

What I am most pleased with is the inclusion of being able to connect my HDX to the WWW via a mobile network (3G/4G) sim card wherever I am, when wifi isn't available.
There are some misleading statements out there on the "interweb" regarding the HDX Kindle and connection to 3G/4G mobile networks. I would just like to add my own comments on this subject if I may.
This applies to UK HDX Fire users:
1. By all means opt for the Vodafone sim card offered when you purchase your HDX, but be aware that you're NOT tied to HAVING to use the Vodafone network. You can purchase a sim card broadband data pack from other UK mobile network providers that will work perfectly well with the HDX Fire.
2. The sim card size in my device is a NANO sim, NOT a micro sim as is often seen in internet reviews/statements.
When getting a sim from other providers they seem to think that you need a dongle to insert your sim into and then plug the dongle into the device's USB port. THIS IS NOT TRUE. You DO NOT need a dongle. Just buy the nano size sim card, nothing else! Read more ›

Fantastic device: not perfect, but so close!

This is my first foray into Amazon's take on Android so I was a little sceptical that they could compete with other high-end Android devices. Well, I needn't have worried. The device is easy to use and set up, the software is well designed and snappy, and the Amazon eco-system is very impressive: but you really need a Prime membership to get the most out of it.

The good:

* The screen is stunning. Colours are lifelike, unlike the over-saturated screens on some other devices.
* The speakers are incredible for a device this size: I haven't come across any other tablet which sounds so good. There is no distortion at high volume.
* It's light. I have been spending hours at a time holding it and it never gets heavy. It's a few grams heavier than an iPad Air but it's still light enough.
* It's fast. Apps load instantly. Games play without lag or dropped frames.
* Although I generally don't care about cameras in tablets, this one is actually pretty good.
* There are some nice software touches: quiet time, a proper daily backup of all your data/settings to the cloud (something that stock Android is very poor at), Firefly, Mayday, etc.
* The music audio quality when using headphones is superb.
* Battery life is great.
* Wi-Fi speed is great.
* The Silk browser is excellent. I thought I would struggle without Google Chrome but Silk has a killer feature in Reading Mode: how have I lived without this feature for so long?

The bad:

* The Amazon Appstore is simply not as good as Google Play. While this isn't a big issue for me personally, I think other people may find this frustrating. Read more ›

My new Fire 8.9 HDX is brilliant. I upgraded from the Fire 7 HD and I am so glad I took the decision to do that. Its bright and clear and easy to use. I had to use the Mayday button a couple of times and that was so good. I loved having live help at my finger tips. My second Mayday query had to be referred to technical support, but again they were so helpful and quickly resolved my problem. Another brilliant addition is the rear facing camera, which was missing from the previous fires. I love it and the pictures taken are a great resolution. And if you want the front facing camera a quick swipe is all it takes. Another brilliant addition is the Firefly. I aimed it at the TV to see how it works and it searched away and came up with 'Home and Away', which is what I was watching. So impressed.
This fire is slim, light weight and sleek.
My only complaint is that the usb cable that comes with this device is very short so not ideal if the plug is some distance away. To solve that problem I have purchased a longer replacement. However, I think Amazon should look at including a longer usb cable as standard.
The new Fire HDX 8.9 is certainly worth the cost and I would highly recommend this Fire to anyone.

I normally do not write reviews but I`m so pleased with my new Fire HDX 8.9 64Gb I will give my view, its one best Tablets I`ve used very impressive, the speed of its quad core 2.5 cpu and the display is second to none brillant, my wifi connection is crisp and fast. Very smooth running and easy to use, the only thing I would say the tablet is excellent but Amazon could add more apps which I`ve got use to on my Apple ipad. I`ve got a iPad 4 64Gb Retina display, and the HDX8.9 is more than a match against it, very pleased Excellent
