World Stories - International Reporters

We take a quick detour down under to listen to truckers' poems about the loneliness of the open road. We travel to Chile to see how fishermen there are fighting to save their livelihoods. In Russia, we watch aspiring cosmonauts go through some tough training, and we visit monks living outside the tumbledown walls of Jericho. We also take a dip in the Black Sea - with horses trained to swim.

Topics

Somalia: The Pain of Rape

In Hargeisa, northern Somalia, a young Ethiopian refugee is trying to overcome the trauma of gang rape - and care for the baby she bore as a result. Many women in the country have suffered similar fates.

As civil war and famine give rise to ever more gender-based violence, one woman is raising awareness of the problem and helping the victims deal with the pain in a society that shuns and stigmatizes them. Faith Kasina reports for UNTV.

Australia: Dust Poems

The idea behind the Dust Poems project was to approach a group of people not generally known for their poetic bent - in this case, Australian truck drivers - and ask them to express their feelings in verse.

The results were surprising. It turned out many truckers were already closet bards, expressing the loneliness and hardships of life on the road in highly artistic compositions that made short work of popular clichés. A report from TVS.

Chile: Uprising of the Fishermen

With its thousands of kilometers of coastline, Chile has a long and rich fishing tradition. Every year, its fishing communities celebrate the festival of Saint Peter, patron saint of fishermen, and petition his help and protection.

Now, the greatest threat to their livelihoods is a new law that would allow industrial trawlers into the already over fished five-mile zone formerly reserved for small, individually operated boats. Malena Rodríguez Suárez looks at their struggle for UCVTV.

Russia: Cosmonaut Hopefuls

We take you behind the scenes at a training facility for Russian cosmonauts. Cosmonauts must be physically fit, have top technical skills, a good knowledge of English and be able to survive in the wilderness.

The Russian trainees take it all in their stride. They learn to use their minds to control their bodies. Reporter Yogor Piskunov from Russia Today visited them and put his own suitability for the profession to the test.

The West Bank: The Monks of the Mount of Temptation

Outside the city of Jericho, perched on the sheer rock face of the Mount of Temptation, is a Greek-Orthodox monastery. It's now home to a single monk living a life of devotion and prayer.

Nearby, the monks of another monastery welcome a steady stream of pilgrims and tourists. They come for a taste of the daily life of the hermits who inhabited the mountain's caves for thousands of years - John the Baptist was a well-known example. Anja Koch reports.

Bulgaria: Swimming Horses

Four generations of the Buch family have bred horses in the mountains of southeastern Bulgaria. Vasil Buch learned to ride as a small child. Eight years ago, the family built a stable near the shore in Black Sea resort of Lozenets.

Since then, Vasil has trained more than 20 horses to swim with confidence. We joined them for a dip, and cameraman Stefan Todorov captured some rare underwater footage of swimming horses. Maria Tsantsarova reports for NOVA TV.
