MyLanguage a Finalist in Stockholm Challenge

30 March 2006

MyLanguage, a multilingual web portal project with which the Library is closely associated, has been named a finalist in the prestigious 2006 Stockholm Challenge. This international competition rewards projects which use information technology to improve living conditions and increase economic growth. Its selection of MyLanguage recognises the project's success in serving Australia’s multilingual communities since its launch in late 2005.

Enriching Australia’s linguistic and cultural cyberspace, MyLanguage provides access to a vast range of online information in more than 60 languages. Resources include search engines, web directories, government websites, online dictionaries, and syndicated news headlines.

The project is the result of a partnership between seven of Australia’s State and Territory library services. The State Library of Victoria, through its Vicnet division, was a key player in this collaboration, bringing to the project significant expertise in community development through IT and multilingual web development.

Winners will be announced in Stockholm in May.
