The State Library of Victoria is preparing its front lawn for summer. Working in conjunction with the Melbourne City Council, the State Library is experimenting with various grass varieties to determine which will be best for a low-water, high-traffic environment.

A portrait of cricketing legend Shane Warne by Victorian artist David Ralph can now be seen in the Library's Newspaper Reading Room. The painting is one of only two Warne has sat for - the other is at Lords in England.

Last night the Premier, Mr John Brumby, announced the winners of two major Victorian literary awards, the Premiers' Literary Awards and the RE Ross Trust Playwrights' Script Development Awards. 'Carpentaria', by Alexis Wright, was one of the books recognised, winning the Vance Palmer Award for Fiction.
