Book Now For Stephen Murray-Smith Lecture

27 September 2007

Book now for the 2007 Stephen Murray-Smith Lecture, to be held on 4 October. Dr Tom Griffiths, Professor of History and Graduate Director in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University, will be talking about the cultural challenge of Antarctica.

In the summer of 1985-86, Stephen Murray-Smith voyaged to Antarctica on the Icebird. On his return he urged his country to make a greater cultural investment in the continent of ice. 'If this country has a future in Antarctica,' he declared, 'it will be because people have ideas about it.'

This lecture will tell the story of his voyage and search for our reflections in the ice. Can strategic idealism triumph over short-term politics in 'the last continent'?

In 2002-03, Dr Griffiths was a Humanities Fellow with the Australian Antarctic Division, and his latest book is Slicing the Silence: Voyaging to Antarctica (New South/UNSW Press, 2007).
