Summer Read Top Five Books Announced

26 February 2008

The top five favourite Victorian summer reads, as voted by the public, were announced today at the Library's Summer Read closing ceremony. Taking equal top honours were Max Barry's Company and Barry Heard's Well Done, Those Men.

Company is a wry and satirical novel about corporate culture. Well Done, Those Men is a memoir that draws on Barry Heard's own experiences of life before, during and after the Vietnam War.

The other books in the top five were (in order of votes) Alice Pung’s Unpolished Gem, Ilsa Evan’s Broken, Diana Georgeff’s Delinquent Angel and Kate Holden’s In My Skin.

Four lucky people who cast votes for their favourite book won voter prizes. They won a weekend away, Summer Read book sets and a book voucher.

The closing ceremony featured Rosemary McKenzie, who announced the winners, Library Board chairman the Hon John Cain, who spoke about the great success of the program, and Summer Read author Adrian Hyland, who read from his book Diamond Dove.

Mr Cain also announced the launch of a new initiative, the quarterly Bedside Book Club, which, as the name suggests, is focused around discussion of the books people have on their bedside table. The first event takes place in May and features Summer Read winning author Max Barry. Contact Susan McLaine at smclaine@slv.vic.gov.au for more information on how to join.
