Updated Collection Policy Goes Online

22 August 2006

The Library has an updated policy to guide its collection development activities. Approved by the Library Board of Victoria this month, it replaces the Collection Development Policy that has served the Library well for the past six years.

Although much of the collecting intention remains the same, the document has been revised to reflect the Library's slv21 strategy, which embraces the importance of digital access and resources. This can be seen most obviously in the policy's new name - the Collection and Resources Development Policy - and its reinvention as a more easily updatable digital-only publication, available free via the web.

The policy provides an overview of each of the Library’s eight main collections - Arts, Australian History & Literature, Australian Manuscripts, Genealogy, Newspapers, Pictures, Rare Printed and Redmond Barry - and describes collecting strengths, subject areas and sub-collections.

It makes public the intentions of the Library in building its vital public collection, helps guide Library staff in the best use of the funds available for purchase and supports donors in making decisions about placing items in the State Collection.
