The State Library Hosts Visitors from China

15 December 2005

The State Library recently played host to two staff members from the Nanjing Public Library, the third-largest public library in China. The visit was part of a reciprocal exchange program established between Nanjing Public Library and the State Library in 1985. It was a significant visit, as the last staff exchange occurred in 1987, although there has been a continuous deposit of exchange materials between the two libraries throughout the program’s life.

Deputy Director of Application of Information Technology Ms Wang Fang and Associate Research Fellow, Deputy Director, Department of Research, Ms Yang Lingxue spent several weeks meeting with staff and exploring the Library’s magnificent buildings and collections.

The two were particularly interested in the Library’s online services, digitisation projects, professional development activities, literacy and youth literature. Although the bulk of the visitors' time was spent at the State Library of Victoria, they also travelled to the State Library of New South Wales, the ACT Library and Information Service and the National Library of Australia.
