Touring Treasures

15 February 2007

Once again, some of the State Library's key treasures are going on tour, enabling regional Victorians to see collection items up close and hear heritage experts explain their significance.

The 2007 Travelling Treasures highlight three pivotal moments in Australia’s history: European settlement and the First Fleet, the Eureka Rebellion, and the story of mateship and survival in prisoner of war camps during World War II.

The official account of the voyage of the First Fleet to Botany Bay by Arthur Phillip, first governor of NSW, features fascinating early maps and illustrations. Also on show is the diary of Samuel Lazarus, which recounts his life on the Victorian goldfields and his observations of the Eureka Rebellion. Complementing this item are two early Victorian goldfields maps. The Lofty Cannon Collection, comprising sketches and correspondence by British artist Ronald Searle, depicts scenes from his time as a prisoner of war in World War II.

Residents in Cowes, Korumburra and Moe can see the travelling treasures in March. In June they visit Seymour, Bendigo and Maryborough.
