Winners of Inaugural Inky Awards Announced

13 November 2007

The winners of the inaugural Inky Awards were announced yesterday by the Centre for Youth Literature. The Inkys are Australia's first teenage choice awards - recognising and encouraging young readers' views and rewarding their favourite authors.

More than 3000 young people from all over the world voted via SMS and online for their favourite books. They chose to award the Gold Inky for best Australian book to Notes from the Teenage Underground, by Simmone Howell (Pan Macmillan). The Silver Inky, for favourite international book, went to Looking for Alaska, by John Green (HarperCollins).

Australian winner Simmone Howell receives a trophy and $2000 in prize money. International recipient John Green receives a trophy. Medallion stickers for the winning books will be distributed to publishers and booksellers.

A longlist of 20 books (10 Australian and 10 international) was chosen by the Centre for Youth Literature, in consultation with young people and other youth literature professionals. A shortlist was then selected by a panel of six judges – four teenagers, insideadog.com.au manager Lili Wilkinson and Ryan Paine, editor of Voiceworks magazine. Voting was open from 24 September to 5 November.
