Three New Talks Available Online

10 July 2009

A set of highly popular presentations recently held at the Library are now available to listen to on the State Library of Victoria website.

The online recordings feature compelling talks by leading neurologist Professor Fred Mendelsohn, Academy Award winner Jan Sardi and distinguished librarian Mary Ronnie.

Online listeners can hear Professor Mendelsohn's delivery of the annual Redmond Barry Lecture, which sold out weeks in advance. Professor Mendelsohn gave a stimulating presentation on the fascinating ways the brain can adapt and repair itself through learning and exercise, a relatively new discovery.

The recording of the 'View from the Outside: Migrant Stories' event features acclaimed screenwriter Jan Sardi, renowned for his screenplays for Shine and The Notebook, hosting a discussion with a panel of first- and second-generation Australian writers. Authors Raimond Gaita (Romulus, My Father), Amra Pajalic (The Good Daughter) and Arnold Zable (Jewels and Ashes, Café Scheherazade) give very personal accounts of how their experiences as migrants and sense of place are reflected in their writing.

This discussion is part of the extensive program of events accompanying the Library's exhibition 'The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria'.

The recording of this year's Foxcroft Lecture captures Mary Ronnie, one of New Zealand's most notable librarians, speaking about the history of the Dunedin Public Library, established in 1908. Ronnie draws on over 70 years of involvement with the library in her insightful speech.

The collection of audio available on the State Library of Victoria website gives visitors the opportunity to stream or download events they missed and listen at their leisure, or listen again to the details of talks they attended.
