'Naked Democracy' to be Revealed in June

10 May 2006

The Library's new temporary exhibition, Naked Democracy: Governing Victoria 1856-2006, will be revealed in the Library's Keith Murdoch Gallery from 2 June. Curated by historian and author Robyn Annear, it promises to show plenty of political leg.

This free exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of self-government in Victoria, revisiting the highs and lows of Victorian democracy and politics. Exhibits include Fawkner’s 1835 draft constitution, political cartoons, protest banners, and Les Tanner’s 1972 caricature of Henry Bolte in the form of a coffee mug!

Robyn Annear is a previous Creative Fellow at the Library and most recently published A City Lost and Found: Whelan the Wrecker's Melbourne as a result of her Fellowship research.

She will present the stories behind the exhibition and some of its remarkable exhibits in the event 'Backroom Deals: The curator in conversation' on 6 June. She will also speak at 'Naked Democracy: Curator's talk' on 28 June.
