The Making of 'The Medieval Imagination' Exhibition on SBS

10 March 2009

An insightful documentary on the making of the State Library's milestone Medieval Imagination exhibition will screen on SBS on 21 March.

The immensely popular 2008 exhibition was the largest ever display of medieval art in Australia, showcasing over 90 of the world's most precious manuscripts from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance period.

For those who missed the exhibition and wish to explore the intricate manuscripts of this era, and those who visited many times, the behind-the-scenes story of The Medieval Imagination is fascinating.

The Medieval Imagination documentary presents interviews with the curator and main organisers of the exhibition. They describe the process of co-ordinating such a grand show, which involved collaborating with institutions across the UK, New Zealand and Australia, and shipping priceless ancient books from Europe.

The film also features footage of the sumptuous hand-made books and looks at their historic value as vital records of Western thought before the rise of printing.

Directed by Philippe Charluet, the documentary on The Medieval Imagination: Illuminated manuscripts from Cambridge, Australia and New Zealand screens on SBS on Saturday 21 March at 3pm.
