Writers in Focus: Helen Garner & David Kelly

8 November 2004

On Tuesday 9 November, Helen Garner and David Kelly will talk about families, friendship, grief, ethics and the writing process in the Village Roadshow Theatrette from 6.30pm-8pm.

Helen Garner's latest book is Joe Cinque's Consolation. In October 1997 a clever law student at ANU made a bizarre plan to murder her devoted boyfriend after a dinner party. Some of the dinner guests had heard rumours of the plan but nobody warned Joe Cinque. He died of a massive dose of rohypnol and heroin and his girlfriend and her best friend were charged with murder. Helen Garner follows the trial in the ACT Supreme Court.

David Kelly is the author of Fantastic Street, a bitter sweet novel about growing up in a house full of siblings - fostered, adopted, step and blood. Helen Garner has described its as ‘ A desperate, dreamily hilarious family story, bright with pain and love’.
