Minister Announces 2008 Premier's Literary Awards Shortlist

8 August 2008

Arts Minister Lynne Kosky today announced the shortlist for the 2008 Premier's Literary Awards. Thirty-eight works have been shortlisted across 12 categories, including journalism, poetry, Indigenous writing, fiction, drama and - for the first time - musical theatre.

Shortlisted writers include:

  • Nobel Prize winner JM Coetzee and Helen Garner in the fiction category
  • Richard Flanagan for essay writing
  • writer/director Mathew Saville with composer Briony Marks for their musical theatre script Crossing Live.

Ms Kosky said the Premier's Literary Awards were a key element in the Government's City of Literature initiative, which aims to promote and raise the profile of literature in Victoria. 'This is an exciting time for literature in Melbourne and Victoria as we await the outcome of our bid to become recognised internationally by UNESCO as a 'City of Literature',' Ms Kosky said.

'We have also commenced work on developing Australia's first Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas, to be located within the State Library of Victoria, which will become a hub and meeting place for the literary and publishing community.'
