Exhibition Puts Creative Fellowships in the Picture

7 November 2005

State Library Creative Fellowship recipient Genevieve Grieves brings to life 19th-century photographic portraits of indigenous Australians in this new video and sound installation, Picturing the Old People. The images, from the Library's collection, have been combined with reinterpretations by contemporary Koorie people to present a alternative views of history.

The exhibition explores the process of constructing Aboriginality and examines the relationship between the photographers and their subjects and the photographer's motives. The multimedia artist's work is a result of the State Library's Creative Fellowships program, which promotes original scholarship, writing and creative endeavour. Recipients receive the opportunity to work closely with the Library's rich resources.

Picturing the Old People can be seen in Experimedia from 18 November 2005 until 12 February 2006.
