National Treasures Exhibition Opens

7 March 2006

The magnificent free travelling exhibition National Treasures from Australia's Great Libraries opens at the State Library of Victoria on 10 March, following on from its successful opening run at the National Library of Australia. This major new show draws together over 170 extraordinary objects and documents from Australia's National, State and Territory libraries to tell a rich and remarkable story of the nation's history.

The exhibition spans Australia's convict and colonial era, two world wars, recent innovations and our constant obsessions with sport, food and wine. It offers Victorians a unique opportunity to view celebrated icons such as Ned Kelly's helmet, Captain Cook's Endeavour journal and Sir Donald Bradman's bat along with items which reveal lesser-known stories about Australia's past.

National Treasures from Australia’s Great Libraries is an initiative of CASL, the Council of Australian State Libraries, and is managed by the National Library of Australia. It is on display at the State Library of Victoria from 10 March until 7 May 2006. It will then travel to other state and territory capital cities, starting with Tasmania on 26 May.
